The following is all speculation and is simply what I believe MAY be the relationship between King Rutherford and Princess Twilight in Vindhov's universe.

Twilight currently a single mother too two beautiful children is having a hard time balancing her duties as a mother and the Princess of Friendship. When she is once again called away from her children too Yakyakistan Twilight quickly finds herself depressed, and once there, quickly throws herself into her work. Talking with Prince Rutherford and his advisers over menial things such as trade agreements quickly stresses, an already stressed and exhausted Princess to near her breaking point, a thing which the Prince seems to take notice of.

Always brash and upfront a loud Prince Rutherford confronts Twilight, who breaks down, and against her better judgement, finds herself confiding in the older Prince. Through tears she tells him about her beliefs that she fails as both a mother and a princess, how she's scared she's loosing her son over her and his fathers divorce, as well as her other failed relationships. The Prince listens silently and when Twilight is finally finished he is honest with her as well, and talks about his own fears, and desire to have a family but his royal duties consistently get in the way. From this moment a friendship quickly forms, and both are happy to have another royal that they can confide in, however this only relieves so much stress.

Rutherford, still just as upfront, tells Princess Twilight about a proposal where they have a strictly physical relationship, and although Twilight is at first flustered and embarrassed the minute the Prince scoops her up in his big, strong hooves, she melts and all her fears are momentarily forgotten. They continue this relationship until Princess Twilight needs to leave and go back to Ponyville, and although she is sad that she won't be able to continue their fun "romps in the hay" she leaves feeling confident for the first time in a long while, and is happy she now has a new, dear friend.

Twilight and Prince Rutherford maintain a healthy relationship through letters and the occasional visit, and although Rutherford cannot see his daughter much due to his work, he's happy that he has a daughter.
