The Apple family was waiting, anxiously for Big Mac's return. He told his family that he planned on proposing to Sugar Belle yesterday before leaving the house, happy as can be, however he hasn't been seen since. Many including his family figured that perhaps they were just spending some alone time together, but as time went on with no news they began to wonder if perhaps Big Mac's proposal didn't go as planned and he was off moping somewhere. Applejack was debating on looking for her brother when a steady and strong knock came from their front door, and upon opening it she was greeted with a tall, older looking police officer.

The colt greeted her with a simple hello, and almost immediately Applejack could sense that something was wrong, but she couldn't have possibly imagined the news to come. Officer Silver Cell informed Applejack that her brother, Big Mac, had died in a fire late last night, and that so far the evidence pointed to it being an accident. He said it in a very matter of fact kind of way, but in his eye's there was great sadness, Silver hated this part of his job. At first Applejack kind of laughed, and thought it was a joke, but Silvers fixed expression slowly wore away at the little mare. Applejack now shaking pleaded for the officer to say that this was merely a joke, but he sadly couldn't tell her that lie. By now curiosity had also driven Granny Smith and Apple Bloom to the door, who were confused, but upon seeing Applejack's expression they new something was horribly wrong. Officer Silver heaved a heavy sigh and one again told the news that Big Mac had died in a fire and at first, like Applejack, Apple Bloom just thought it was a joke. However when Applejack scooped up Apple Bloom in a strong hug, not even Apple Blooms young innocence could shield her from the devastating news.

Apple Bloom cried, and Applejack just held onto Apple Bloom tightly, trembling. Applejack couldn't even look at the police officer anymore, couldn't hear his words, she just kinda froze, paralyzed by pain. Granny Smith, hardened by age gently rubbed Applejack's back while listening quietly as the police officer gave what details he could. It appeared that Big Mac had refurbished an old shed that he found on the outskirts of Ponyville, into a romantic get away. He had fabrics, flowers, and candles, the candles had been what started the fire, and from what they could tell so far, evidence pointed to Big Mac accidentally knocking over one of these candles while he was inside the shed. The shed being repaired with dry, untreated wood, quickly became a bonfire, trapping Big Mac inside with no way to escape.
