The 'Hil' in Hilbert comes from 'hilde', meaning 'battle' in another language (I forgot which one as bulbapedia is currently down) so Hilbert's name isn't exactly as stupid as some might think. Same goes for Hilda.

I doubt the people localizing the names thought that far. They probably thought of the name Hilda, as it isn't too uncommon to hear it (considering Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and then said "Hey there's another name that begins with 'hil'. Barely anyone will have heard the name before, but it'll be clever right! "

I can't stand the names Hilbert or Hilda. It's just...I don't know; I just don't particularly care for them.
I ended up picking the boy character for my game (my first boy) and I named him Kilroy (but this is probably because I was constantly listening to the song "Mr. Roboto" around that time XD)

I liked the fan names Blake or Blair for the boy character, but Hilbert isn't too bad. However, Hilbert and Hilda are a bit too similar.

I agree with you. Touya/Black and Touko/White would be MUCH better than Hilda and Hilbert... Seriously, I mean, can't Nintendo go through a book of names or something and choose better names for them? If they were going to name them similar names, they should've tried names that were at least better... like Alex or Alexa/Alexis... I ended up choosing the name White though. =_=;;

Here's the interesting bit. His name was mostly taken from the Germanic word for "battle". While in Germany he has a more acceptable name of Warren. Why couldn't NOA have tried something like that. Hell, even his French name, Ludwig, sounds better than that hick name he got stuck with
