California maybe, 45,000 years ago. About teatime.

Two dire wolves (Aenocyon dirus) are awoken by a third approaching pack member.

These are just three possible pelts I gave the loups, instead of the usual grey wolf meme.
Left to right:
Inspired by the pelts of the south American foxes (various species). Still a mixture of grey and reddish brown, common with many canids, but not quite what you see in wolves.
Just a dark boi. Somewhat inspired by the dark colorations in bush dogs and some crab-eating foxes of South America.
Inspiration from maned wolves and dholes for the red colour, plus the "peppering" on the back, also a common trait in canid pelts.
Environment and background are a but rushed, my main focus was the doggos.

In case ya didn't hear, a new paper fiiiiinnnally came out regarding the phylogeny of dire wolves, based on molecular evidence.

Turns out, they were not close at all to living wolves, and instead diverged between the Andean fox and jackals. Thus they warrant their own genus, Aenocyon.
