Description doodles of an underrated bovine, the wild yak (Bos mutus).
One of the largest of all bovines, about the size of an American bison, to which it is closely allied (+wisents too).
Yakking around. On the top right a yak buries its horn in an unfortunate cave lion (panthera spelaea), somewhere in the mountains of Pleistocene Asia.
Today the remaining wild yak are restricted to the Tibetan plateau and surrounding regions, but in the past they spread far to the northeast, inhabiting parts of southern Siberia, perhaps even Yakutia and Chukotka if those finds are valid. It is often stated that they inhabited Pleistocene Alaska, but in reality these "yak" fossils are misidentified domestic cattle (Bos primigenius taurus)
