Summary
Shark is a wild caught sexually mature male orca collected from New Zealand in 1992.

He has sired one offspring; a male named Skate in 2004 via artificial insemination, born to Kahna at the Dolphinarium.

Shark has been noted to be highly dominant and aggressive in nature to trainers and other whales alike. Due to numerous aggressive incidents with other male whales, he is kept separate from the Dolphinarium's other orcas for their safety, however Valentine is an exception as Shark has bonded to him very closely. He can often be seen swimming in the mother-calf position with Valentine. He does not become distressed when separated from Valentine unless for extended periods.

Shark is considered highly dangerous, and only experienced senior trainers are permitted to work with him, and never alone – several spotter trainers must be present. Drywork is to be conducted from behind a physical barrier. Husbandry and medical procedures must be conducted with safety bars in place, only after Shark has been sedated for safety purposes. Remains of birds that he kills are to be left in the tank with him until he is gated into a different tank, at which point it is safe to retrieve them. Update May 2013: Shark is no longer a show animal and is not to be used as an underwater viewing animal. He is to be kept out of any tanks that are open to the public during park hours.

Non-canonical as it is, Shark's turning out to be quite the stud.

I only point out as much because I adore the idea of Skate () and he having an awkward relationship. Shark, for all his blustery mood swings, only needs to face the result of one of his "conquests" to turn adorably shy and uncertain.

Hmmm... I kinda thought the same way when I made the brothers (one, I thought about its similarity with Okura's though his color was changed to gray, and the other inspired by a piece of paper mustache)

AnoOrca In reply to Vanzkie [2012-05-13 06:55:53 +0000 UTC]

I actually first drew Shark when I was little, and I thought their eye was inside their eyepatch (Imagine Little Spot from Free Willy 2 if you've seen it - he had the black spot inside his eyepatch. I thought it was his eye. ...Apparently I thought only Little Spot had eyes or something, lmao)
