Hey All,

Here is one of my Matte Paintings I created for David Lumsden’s short film, BOAT about 3 years ago. In total, I created around 80 DMPs to complete the 15 min short film which took me roughly a year and a half haha (Jan 2011-July 2012). The actors shown on the DMPs are for placement purposes only (not final composites). The same goes for the water. I added them in as reference. This was a pretty sweet project to work on, but it was incredibly tough going. For starters, I couldn't matte paint when I began the project and so had to teach myself on the go. I also had to act as my own Art Director although that paid off pretty well as I won a BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award 2015 for Design earlier this year ;D

Some notes about this image...

The boat was filmed stationary, but with the Dad rowing (as if they were moving). The boat and actors would then be scaled down to what you see on the matte. They were then composited to "row" into shot from right to left, imagining some kind of devastating scenario going on around them (I had done some really quick concept art to help out the actors). The water would later be removed and replaced with vfx. This shot is part of a much larger scene that was filmed and took me the longest to complete as it was quite complicated. Once the Director and Editor had edited the film and we knew exactly how this whole scene would be played out it was then up to me to Art Direct, Concept and Matte Paint everything together haha. I remember scribbling a basic top down layout on a scrap piece of paper of where I figured the boat would row in from and to where it'd stop. I laid out about 8 buildings in total which would cover all the angels needed in the different shots that would eventually unfold for this one whole scene.
