Description An arriving transport slows down as it reaches it's destination; an enormous space city orbiting a distant planet.

Another fairly old piece, one of the last I painted with a mouse. This was an experiment in bringing multiple mediums together.

Drawn in PS 7 - Simple block created for station, planetscape drawn from photo ref, arriving craft scanned in pencil sketch that was then painted up. Original res 6250x1800

Awesome! I love the little details; the other ships at the docking bays and in the distance, the "milky way" band of stars... just incredible. And you did it with a mouse? Nice!

the dimensions on this add to the reality, because it is viewed as a movie screen. almost like a scene introduction. good job on that

and another great image from you... I adore it, unlike many other space pieces from other artist this one has a warm and friendly athmosphere. that comes from these colours, the reds and blues, and all the tones inbetween. your space crafts are futuristical, yet they look as if they could be real. the starfield is fairly simple, but since focus lies on the space station this isn't bad.
I've tried painting planets too, but never succeeded...no one recognized a planet that's kind of discouraging.
the more I love looking at your piece, painted planets do have their own feeling, a dynamic, mysterious one.
once again, excellent!

you are extremely good at making these space scenes. the space station reminds of cloud city in return of the jedi. very nice and professional website, too.

taylormemer1 [2004-09-25 17:20:04 +0000 UTC]

It's very well done indeed.

Colour:
There is a very beautiful use of colour here. The use of the superb gradient in the atmosphere is soft and detailed. It finally sifts down towards the main planet very gently. Great look there. There are many other colour details that are just stunning. You always go into great detail with your colour choice and placement, always great to see.
Each area boasts it's own unique colour style, but not too dramatically and in a non-distractive manner. For example: Starting from the transport ship, the background colour of the planet happening to be a subtle orange brings out the outline shape of the craft, and revealing its movement intentions. Moving onwards to the right, the space station is brought out well with the darker dull grey blue, which really brings out it's little lights. It's really amazing how it all fits so well together.

Concept:
A nice concept, with a good sense about it, and it relates well with it's title.
"An arriving transport slows down as it reaches it's destination; an enormous space city orbiting a distant planet."
Reading that before I actually took a good look at the image; this is exactly how I imagined the scene to be in the final piece. Well done.

Texture/Style:
The texture used on the main planet is really quite nice. I can't really decide if it's an atmosphere cloud top, or terrain, but that adds to its illusive mystery. The star field is simple and not complex, but one thing that I see a lot of artists do is have a space scene in which there is a sun light source, but for some reason there are still stars showing. Think of it as being like daytime on Earth, you don't see any stars. I know it's Sci-Fi, but there are some boundaries that I think can't be broken when creating a space piece. Or maybe it would look incomplete without a star field, I don't know. Something to keep an eye on in future pieces perhaps, even a bit of trial and error.
Really though the texture used on everything is terrific, especially on the objects. They are always so intricate and delicate in texture, and colour as I said before.

Objects:
Each object, whether it is a spacecraft, space station or planet; you've placed them all well. Adding depth with the distant planet, then bringing it closer and closer in with another planet, and finally with another to complete it all. The other objects in the foreground (space craft, space station) are well placed and presented, synchronising themselves with the colour and background as I stated before.

Composition/overall:
This is such an amazing effort by you. Indeed you seem to be learning and growing on your great style, it certainly shows in this. It shows alot of realism, and makes me feel like i'm inside the image, as with most of your pieces. It's a great piece, showing excellent style and bringing out your true talent.

In a calmer vein--really nice work. I particularly love the planet and how the structures stand out as sihlouettes against it rather than gleaming in the sunlight like your typical NASA pic.

this is really incredible, definitely showcases your spacescape abilities well. I need to try a few superhuge planets from that style view myself someday, something I've yet to attempt. Beautiful sense of perspective although grasping the POV of the larger ship and the station is a little difficult imo. The large planet detail is A* work, and right down to the backdrop space it's super stuff. Great work
