Description
This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”
Painted in Adobe PS CS3
Wacom Intous 3 Tablet
Original res 5k wide
About 20-22 hour work.
I used some great photos of Earth from space as reference for the world.

I can't wait until we reach that level of technology ^^ Hopefully our designs will be as elegant.

Hey, this is really amazing. I'm a big fan of all your work! Can I ask, when you start a piece, do you do a lot of sketching before-hand? what kind of process do you go through? I've really been wanting to learn how to do these types of paintings.

bottom half = amazing
but imho the stars are abit flat, could be more dynamic to add more depth to the space part
ace work all in all but the stars do irk me a tad
my 2 cents ^^

I second that A nice spacepart would be soooo great.
Change that pic from horizontal to vertical that you see the whole planet + paint some cool nebulae + add some spacesstations = best pic ever

Difficult call there - the close proximity to the world and the reflective strength of the light from the (off camera) sun make nebula painting very difficult to resolve, you simply would not see a nebula or cloud network in that lighting condition (which, ironically was in the 2000 original!) so I kept the stars to a minimum - like the sort of field you see when you get an earth shot from the ISS etc with a long exposure. Thanks for the feedback though

ok no problem space art is the only thing (besides photography) I think I'm good at. And I still think that it's possible to paint a nebula in such a pic that's full of fantasy. But it's your pic, and it's awesome anyway
