This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.
“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”

About 20-22 hour work.
I used some great photos of Earth from space as reference for the world.

this is so beautiful and realistic... i feel like I'm in a dream... Also takes me to the futuristic feel of Ender's Game for some reason... oh well, this definitely gets my mind racing, looking at this picture. I really love it, I want to have the patience to complete a piece like this someday...

I keep looking at this work and I keep finding things that I love about it!
The detail for one, strikes me on an amazing level, the amount of work that has been put into this piece, the trails of exhaust from the crafts that are approaching the spire in the foreground. And the additional spires that lie in the background, I am sure that they would have a very similar support structure at their base in reality.
All in all, very well done!
