Description
This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”
Painted in Adobe PS CS3
Wacom Intous 3 Tablet
Original res 5k wide
About 20-22 hour work.
I used some great photos of Earth from space as reference for the world.

An engineering feat that simply surprises me. The atmosphere (so to speak) is simply superb. A dramatic camera angle over a planet with orbital docking areas sprouting into the heavens like some exotic metal flower
The scale? Amazing.
That atmospheric blending? Outstanding.
The overall sight of it? Just plain awesome. Good job!

Looks like it came out of a scene from EVE Online.
Epic.

Sweet scene. Love the wild clouds and low lighting. Between the weather and that huge docking station hovering above, I guess the inhabitants of that city don't need to worry about sunburns btw ^_^

Damn! Lets just build that thing. Although it looks so real it feels we have one already.
If you build it they will come...

Scale's off.
If those skyscrapers in the city are supposed to be 20km high, then that main port is easily over 200km, not just 100km.
