Description This is a little bit of a revisit to an old idea – “Orbit” was originally just me mucking about but became very popular for prints and publishing – however I never really thought that much about it at the time (I was literally just sketching space art as a bit of fun between projects). I loved the idea of the piece so now, 8 years on I've had another stab at it.

“A highly advanced race builds an enormous spaceport off the coast of a continent, dwafing the 20km high skyscrapers on the land, the main structure brushing the cloud layers with near 100km diameter docking spurs surrounding it. Built above the main structure, another level that is beyond the atmosphere – allowing craft to dock without braving the weather on the planet”

Painted in Adobe PS CS3
Wacom Intous 3 Tablet
Original res 5k wide
About 20-22 hour work.
I used some great photos of Earth from space as reference for the world.

Beautiful! I love the colours and framing here. The level of detail is also very nice. Reminds me on Ralph McQuarrie in his best times. Top fave! Best wishes, Jack - Mattedepartment

Hi, I made some songs and I was going to put them on youtube. And I’m making a slideshows of artwork for the songs for people to look at when they listen to the music so it’s not so boring. Can I use this picture in the slideshow if I give the internet address to go to your picture of if I gave the link to go to this picture from youtube?

I was watching Gundam 00 and thinking of this: and here you are, already drawing it It looks amazing.

I have to ask you: Would you be offended if I wanted to incorporate this idea (not copy) into my work? I've been trying to draw a hub city for months now, with a central Magnetic Accelerator (a rail gun) for launching shuttles into space. But basically, I need a really cool place for my characters to cause havoc and blow eachother to bits.

an amazing image - and one similar to what plays in my imagination. i would think the second structure would need to be higher up, further yet away from the surface.. though i couldn't begin to guess on the physics..

wow, I saw this just now, but this is a piece that I just cannot pass by, without commenting on it.

Let me say, my very first impression was "whoa".

The second somewhere around "dang, that's impressive".
And it really is, you once again excelled at what makes your images stand out so much: your sense of scale. This piece just breathes scale, it looks truly gigantic, and that's perfectly underlined by your wonderful composition, the darks against brights, the values in general and the fine detail.
I looked at it for a while, staring at the main structure, discovering all its little details, getting excited about there being skyscrapers even on top of the top-most platform. And the platform just reads so well, against the clouds which are hit by sunlight. This whole scenery sets my mind going, making me wonder how people live there, what means of travelling they have, to even move within the space harbor, which already is huge in itself.

Then my eyes wandered down, down to the shadowed area, only to discover more city and buildings, seeing the coast line, and really understanding the architecture and geography of this place. The brief description was very interesting too...if people build a dock so far up, in order for their space ships to not break the weather, you really start to think about how huge those vehicles must be, if they can have such an impact on the environment.
Certainly all this is really impressive on a technical level, too, I just love how you brushed the clouds, the wonderful colours, and how you enhanced scale and composition with those antennas.
If at all I am missing an element there, it would perhaps be one of those huge space vessels flying towards the dock, to pull me in even more.

However, there's something about the piece that I do not like, and that's the space and the second big planet...honestly I find the planet bland, it does not really keep up with the rest of the image....it is somewhat too grey for me, and has almost no structures on it, making it quite dull. Also, especially with how advanced architecture, civilazation and vehicles on the main planet are, I would assume that they already explored the other planet as well, so some indicated strctures and lights that look like man-made cities on the planet would be nice. But as it is, I find it an odd break with the main piece.
Also, the space could use some subtle hints of space dust or nebulae in my eyes, it just looks a bit empty right now. Which is probably quite realistic, but just does not suit the piece, when some subtle nebulae would really tie together space and main planet better. Nothing distracting, just hints.
Last but not least, I find the atmosphere of the main planet to look like it has some bad artifacts...that is probably due to jpeg compression, but I just thought, I'd point it out.

Anyway, that's just me, and I still find this painting immensly impressive, been starting at it for quite a while now. Very well done, I'd say this is your best space art piece so far

Daniel

This is a truly bright future you have created here!
I love the space elevator and the fact that it has such a huge city beneath it.
What are the dimensions here? The lower city looks large enough to contain the citys of New York, London, and Tokyo without breaking a sweat. How large are the ships and the top of the elevator?
