“Oi, Armin! Where are you going?”

Armin, the blond-haired teenager that was creeping out of the boys’ changing rooms, halted immediately, face paling. Mind racing for an appropriate fib to provide, he wondered how he could make plans but not a believable lie.

“Uh, I just- yeah,” he called over his shoulder to Eren, who was leaning against the doorframe of the changing rooms. Stifling a laugh as he saw Eren topple over because Jean barged into him, Armin waved goodbye.

“Just remembered I forgot something at the training grounds; after you hit me in the head, you must’ve given me short-term amnesia or something,” he joked, before running off. Soon, he was away from the squabbling of the two boys and nearing the training grounds.

‘Where was it?’ he thought, running towards the border of bushes and trees at the edge of the training grounds. Lowering himself to his knees, he parted the bushes carefully, peering into the leafy foliage.

In the middle of the wild bushes and plants, he saw a small rose bush in a tiny clearing; sheltered by the thicker branches of its seniors. Unsheathing a small dagger that he had brought along with him, Armin chose the most beautiful rose, and cut it at the base of its stem.

Wrapping the thorny stem in a rag before he could prick himself, Armin quickly sheathed the small dagger, before standing up. He grinned, holding the rose gently; the blonde stepped back. Right into someone.

                Keith Shadis; his instructor.

“Ah! Sir! I apologize, sir!” he exclaimed, panic rising in his heart. Quickly, he twisted his hand over his heart in a salute. Under the shadowed glare of the bald man, Armin vainly hid the rose behind his back, swallowing down an excuse.

It seemed like a few minutes that he was frozen in salute as Shardis attempted to burn holes into Armin’s skin. Finally, the instructor spoke.

“Who’s the rose for, Arlert?” the bald man growled. Seeing that it was pointless to hide it, Armin slowly swung his arms to his side, looking away guiltily.

“Is it, by any chance, for that girl in the hospital ward you constantly moon over every day?” he continued, in which Armin went bright red.

“H-her name is N-Neva, sir,” Armin stuttered, still looking at his feet. He felt Shardis hold his breath; the sign that he was about to scream something into Armin’s ears.

But to his surprise, what he heard was a low whisper.

“Arlert, look at me,” Shadis said, in which Armin complied to. “Love in these times is something you would do well to stay away from. You are a budding soldier ready to offer up your heart for humanity; or so I hope so. Make sure you know what to choose when the time comes.”

With that, Shadis walked away, not wanting to hear whatever Armin had to say. Watching his instructor’s back, Armin furrowed his brow, before turning on his heel and running towards the hospital ward.

A blonde soldier was here this time, waiting at the desk near the entrance; different from the one yesterday. With a respectful nod of his head, Armin continued into the room, eyes searching for the same person he sought after each day.

“Neva!” he called out to a dark-haired girl, who was looking out the window close to her. Neva turned her head to Armin’s voice, eyes brightening as she saw him.

“Armin,” she softly replied, ignoring the knowing glances from some other occupants. Pulling a chair to sit down next to the bed, Armin offered the rag-covered rose to Neva.

“Thought of you when I saw this in training today,” Armin whispered, extending a hand to brush against Neva’s cheek. A smile graced her face as she accepted the rose. Happily, he watched her raise it to under her nose, before Neva put it in a cup nearby.

“Thanks, Armin. You’re the best,” she said, hugging him the best she could without moving her leg. In concern, the blonde broke from the hug, pulling away the blankets carefully. The removal of the sheet revealed Neva’s left leg in a bulky cast, still and unmoving.

“Does it still hurt a lot?” he asked.

Neva shook her head. “Just as long as I don’t move it too much. I think it’s getting better, actually!”

Relieved, Armin placed a light kiss on Neva’s forehead, before standing up. He cupped her face with a hand, an apologetic look on his face.

“Sorry, this visit is really short. The boys’ need to do clean-up in the cabins; or else Shardis will be on our heels,” he apologized, giving a smile. Neva nodded, taking Armin’s hand from her face and squeezing it lightly.

“Don’t apologize. Just make sure Shardis doesn’t kick your butt,” she joked, earning a small laugh from Armin.

                “Okay, will do.”

Exiting the hospital ward with a murmured thanks to the blonde soldier at a desk, Armin stepped outside, face set.

As he walked back to the boys’ cabin, his mind brought him back to Shardis’ earlier words.

“Love in these times is something you would well stay away from. You are a budding soldier ready to offer up your heart for humanity; or so I hope so. Make sure you know what to choose when the time comes.”

“Oh, I know, sir,” he whispered to himself, setting his pace to a jog. “When that time comes, I’ll know.”

                “I already know.”
