“Oi! Soldier! Get a medic or something! Someone’s hurt here!” Levi shouted, holding [Name] slightly, her breaths coming too quietly.
“[Name],” he murmured. “[Name], stay alive a little bit more okay?”
“I… always seem to get in trouble… at your expense,” you said, voice shaking. Levi gave you a half-hearted glare.
“Yeah, you do, you idiot,” Levi growled, adjusting his grip on your back. “So you’re going to do some chores when you’re well and walking again. You can’t trouble your superiors like this.”
“Sorry, sorry,” you muttered, stopping to gulp a breath. A racking cough shook you, amplifying the pain in your chest until you were unconsciously whimpering.
“[Name], what’s happening? Keep breathing, someone’s getting a medic,” Levi assured, sweeping your [h/c] away from your face. You laughed.
“Sorry again, Levi, but I think one of my ribs punctured a lung or something. I don’t think the medic will arrive in time, to be honest,” you admitted, hacking up a few small coughs. You could see Levi wince, like he believed it too, but didn’t want to admit it.
A soldier bent down next to Levi, putting a first-aid kit and a rolled-up stretcher. Getting two finger and pressing down on [Name]’s shoulder, collar-bone, sternum, and finally, upper ribs. And that’s when [Name] shouted in pain.
Levi glanced at the medic’s face, an expression cast across her features that he’s seen many times.
There was no hope for [Name].
“Let’s get you down,” the medic murmured, reaching for the stretcher, but [Name] put a hand on the medic’s leg.
“No, it’s okay. I know, I won’t make it. It’s a stupid way to die, but it’s my fault. Just, leave me here, with Levi; I wanna see the sun set properly.” The sun was only peeking out of the landscape now, ready to duck down and disappear for the day. The medic looked at Levi uncertainly, and the Lance Corporal nodded slightly.
After the medic had gone, Levi looked out at the sun, not wanting to look at the smiling, pale face you wore; it hurt for some reason. The colours of the sunset today was beautiful; pinks, purples, oranges and gold streaking across the canvas we called sky.
“The sunset looks particularly awesome today, huh?” you murmured, and Levi nodded mutely. There was no reprimand or harsh words that he could say that would make everything better; he didn’t want to leave you with an insult.
When you started wheezing breaths, he looked at you painfully, eyes running over your limp figure. “You’re an idiot,” he said, unable to hold back. What else could he say? He wasn’t any good at comfort words. But you knew it was the best he could do, so you grinned.
“Just let me enjoy the sunset,” you said, turning your head towards the horizon. Levi nodded, turning to watch the sinking sun slowly dip under the waves of plains. He stood in that position, for a minute, maybe for five, before he turned back to you.
“[Name]? I don’t come to see the sunset, you kn-” he started, before realizing you were much too still for your own good. Shaking you a bit, his brows furrowed in concern.
“[Name]?”
Your chest didn’t heave up and down as it had done a few minutes ago, labouring away to keep you alive; keep your blood pumping. Nor did your eyelids flicker like they did when you had tried to fake sleeping. The only movement on you was the slow trickle of blood from your mouth; trailing down, down, down, down.
Drip.
He didn’t notice the blood pooling onto the stone in miniscule puddle, but it was different when he pretended not to notice the darkening patches of stone where his tears landed. Surprising really, how used he was to calming himself down, staunching the tears and composing himself. Even for [Name].
Standing, he gestured to the medic waiting nearby. “The stretcher,” he said, as they rushed to heed his order. Then he watched as they took [Name] away, covering her with a blanket of sorts. He stared at the receding dot of the stretcher, before slumping down onto the ground in a sitting position.
It hit him hard when he realized that this had been [Name]’s last sunset; and he never told her the real reason he came up to the walls every day.
Just to see her.
Walking along the stone walls, Levi spied a familiar sentry, standing straight and facing the horizon. Without a sound, he walked closer; his eyes slowly identified the figure.
The same spot; the same [h/c] hair, Levi noted. But it was not [Name], whom he had lost long, long ago.
It was that soldier who replaced [Name] on sentry duty.
Soon, the [h/c] man noticed the Lance Corporal, turning swiftly to salute and bark a greeting. Levi just waved it away, turning to observe the hesitant sun sink lower and lower.
Silence passed between them both, but Levi could feel the tension building around the soldier; words wanting to be said, questions begging to be asked.
“Spit it out,” he said sharply, not moving.
“Yessir.”
Again, the hesitance, before the soldier spoke again. Levi wondered if it was the life mission of everyone around him to waste his time and energy.
“Sir,” the soldier started. “Why do you- er- you don’t have to answer the question, of course.”
“I know I don’t,” Levi snapped. “Ask what you want now, soldier, when you still have a tongue to speak.”
“Yessir! Apologies, sir! I was wondering… why you always come to this particular part of the wall? It can be quite unnerving.”
When Levi didn’t answer, the soldier spluttered over his words to apologize. “Th-that is, you have every right to stay here, sir, I’m sor-”
A hand stopped the inconsistent fumbled words, before Levi inhaled the evening air. “I know I have a right to stand here on these walls,” he replied, before looking at the soldier. “I apologize if it unnerves you, but this is a… habit I have lived up to for a very long time.”
“I used to meet a certain someone up here, who had the same job as you. I never told them that I came up here to meet them; it was silly; stupid. Well, that was what I thought at that time,” Levi continued, unsure of why he was spilling all this to a nameless soldier. Maybe it was because of that, they were nameless, and so he had no attachment to them. It was like speaking to a wooden post.
“But as the person isn’t here anymore, I’ve settled with the other half of the habit. I guess this brings back a few memories I would not like to forget.”
How fortunate it was that the tear that escaped Levi’s eye was the one furthest away from the soldier. Maybe they wouldn’t see it.
“I just come here, every day, to watch another sunset.”

So happy right now, do you have any idea how many times I've retyped this reply to put my gratitude into words. Thank you so, so much, your words mean a lot to me!
I'm so glad someone likes my awkward writing style, it's reassuring I don't look like I'm fumbling. I still have a long, long, long way to improve until I'm happy with where I am!
Hehe, I do feel a little awkward when people portray Levi to directly confess his love; maybe that's why most of my Levi reader inserts are angst themed. Dangit.
But I'm so glad you like this, thank you very much once again! I hope this didn't give you an overdose of feels, dude. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this every time you read.
