Description Hello, everyone, and welcome to the first LTS we've had in a long time! It's so good to see so many of you here. Here today is Halcyon83, who will be covering Rotationals! Please give him your full attention!
hi and welcome all people
Let's have fun!
ok, so before we actually start, i'd like to thank dennis aka TwilightAmbiance who's been helping me from the first day with this project
so, today i will cover rotationals
first i'll give info on what they are
i'll show you some awesome rotationals by awesome artists
and later on we'll get to the technique on how to create them
but first things first: open your APOPHYSIS
i'd like to add, this tutorial will be a mix of subjective info and objective step by step guidance
everyone ready?

[much nodding was done]

so, what are rotationals?
A rotational fractal is a fractal that is based on a rotating movement of the triangles. The more triangles used, the stronger the rotational pattern. A set of 12 rotationalized triangles gives a fairly good starter flame to begin with.
check out this image and study the pattern halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar…
i'll provide params in one minute

the parameters to create such a fractal are as follows:

just copy them, go to your apo window, go to the menu - edit - paste
no problems so far.
?
if yes, please let me know

Got a nice round "button"
Error: No Colors in Pallete
OK
if i'm going too quickly, just let me know...
got it
ZephyrAnalea: what version of apo? i'm using Apo 2.06 c
Same version as yours.
I've ran into that before...just pick a gradient
Halcyon83: Is 2.05Z+C++ appropriate?
ZephyrAnalea: that's weird! i think it's not copying the gradient along
TwilightAmbiance: not sure actually, but i think yes, since it uses ultra basic stuff and variations

Oh, I found the problem. I copied your entire post for reference, instead of starting at . Sorry for the interruption
ZephyrAnalea: yeah, just pick a gradient like StitcherLadyxx said, it should work
no prob
okay
This set of triangles is responsible for the rotational movement you see in pieces like this one: halcyon83.deviantart.com/art/A… It looks like a moving circle, rotating around its axis.
so that is in fact the basis of a rotational fractal
now i'll cover a brief history on rotationals
don't worry, later on we'll get to the technique
When Apophysis became a popular tool among digital artists, let’s say approximately 3-4 years ago, the first images we saw popping up our screen were either uncontrolled shapes betraying a beginner’s skills or spirals and rotationals.
Spirals and rotationals were the first real hypes/trends in Apophysis fractals. Far from being technical masterpieces, the rotationals were all about a subtle game of light and shadow, mesmerizing color palettes and a smooth flow.
Being limited in knowledge and technical skills, back then it was all about the essence: creating a good looking fractal.
and yes, for those who wonder, i copied this from a text i've already written - that makes it easier
The first important artists (on DA) to create and upload rotational fractals were: `Sya, `TomWilcox, ~sideoutman, and later on also *denise-g.
i will now post some of their images, which to me are true masterpieces and sources of inspiration
behold
`Sya sya.deviantart.com/art/Stitche… sya.deviantart.com/art/Prisma-… sya.deviantart.com/art/of-Obse…
if some thumbs don't work, just click them. and let me know when i can show you another set of pieces
am i not going too quickly by the way?

[Much saying of "no" is had]

the brilliant `TomWilcox tomwilcox.deviantart.com/art/E… tomwilcox.deviantart.com/art/A… tomwilcox.deviantart.com/art/T… tomwilcox.deviantart.com/art/C… tomwilcox.deviantart.com/art/M…
you see the smooth flow and perfect coloring in his pieces?
Amazing pieces.
indeed
yeah they are! after this tutorial you will all be able to create these. provided you practice a lot of course

the next artist is my all time favourite one. i so much love the energy in his work
~sideoutman sideoutman.deviantart.com/art/… sideoutman.deviantart.com/art/… sideoutman.deviantart.com/art/… sideoutman.deviantart.com/art/… sideoutman.deviantart.com/art/…
and finally *denise-g denise-g.deviantart.com/art/Or… denise-g.deviantart.com/art/Wh… denise-g.deviantart.com/art/Un… denise-g.deviantart.com/art/Ra…
also look at the brilliant gradients
that's what make these pieces so interesting to look at
and this brings me to the next topic, the holy trinity of rotationals: coloring, lighting and composition
write down those three words and never forget them!
i picked up with rotationals to rebel against today's trends
The past few months Apophysis has undergone a lot of changes. The program evolves and so does the fractal-community. Latest trends in fractal art were all about showing off technique: stained glass, grand julians, tubes and wires, 3D, ….
Since in the beginning of Apophysis artists were exploring the program, technical knowledge was still limited. And as often said: the less tools, the more creative the artist has to be in order to achieve good results.
So, being limited in his skills the artist had to pay more attention to other things to obtain beautiful pieces of art: coloring, lighting and composition – the holy trinity for rotationals.
Because rotationals are rather simple shapes, one has to apply a breathtaking color palette, flawless lighting and an interesting composition to draw the audience’s attention. These instruments are of course subdued to personal tastes and likings, nonetheless they play an important role in the final look of your work.

everyone still with me?

[Much yessing was done!]

any questions yet?
feel free to interrupt!
coloring lighting composition
vulpul: lol okay, you're my best student
Gradients consisting of three or four basic colors and perhaps shades of these basic colors seem to work best. More colors make it sloppy and less than three makes it boring. Bright, flashy and contrasting colors are interesting to work with, though a clean gradient with a sober color scheme works fine too.
Halcyon83: I do have a question, if you don't mind..Does the angle of the 12 (or whatever) triangles matter later on?
fractalyst: you missed this one: Gradients consisting of three or four basic colors and perhaps shades of these basic colors seem to work best. More colors make it sloppy and less than three makes it boring. Bright, flashy and contrastin b are interesting to work with, though a clean gradient with a sober color scheme works fine too.
Meiresthai: i haven't experimented a lot with that yet
Halcyon83: Ah, well, then please continue.
Halcyon83: Sounds and looks like jewel tones are the ticket
Meiresthai: however, when the rotation chain gets interrupted, it affects the fractal
As for lighting, be sure to avoid saturation and too bright spots. On the other hand, the darker the image, the less influence the colors have.
A good composition could either be a safe centered one with a regular zoom and regular camera angle. Yet, an unbalanced composition with lots of black space can work fine as well. As long as the overall flow of your fractal looks nice and smooth, it should be alright.
ok, now we get to the point: the technique of creating rotationals. that's what you've all been waiting for, isn't it?

[An agreement was reached very quickly!]

The first step in creating a rotational fractal is to build a rotational pattern with your triangles. As stated above, an amount of 12 triangles should be enough. Just copy the parameters and paste them into your Apophysis screen. you guys already did that and shoud get an image like this: halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar…
everyone has apo open with this flame?

[Yupping was had!]

someone having trouble? now's the time to interrupt
Mine looks just like that! LOL

This is the fractal you should always begin with, unless you create your own rotational pattern of course. From here on the fun starts. The next step is about tweaking triangles which will affect the shape of your rotational.
Yessir, but the link you just gave doesn't open
ZephyrAnalea: It does, just takes a moment.
ZephyrAnalea: it does after refresh
ZephyrAnalea: skip the link, it's not of major importance
Basically, you just have to take out the first and second transform, then move them around and play with the variations.
The nicest effects are achieved with: linear, spherical, sinusoidal, swirl, spiral, ex, handkerchief, waves, curl, horseshoe, fisheye and eyefish.
Mostly, a total value of 1 (spread over one or more variations) per triangle gives the best results. But be sure to try otherwise too, ‘cause sometimes deviating from the 1 value can give surprising outcomes.
important info!
For instance, take out transform 1 (the yellow one) and set values spiral to 0.25 and ex to 0.75. Tweak and move a little until you get something you like.
i want you all to just this a little. i'll give you 2 mins to play. i'll post my params afterwards
i mean to say: i want you all to just play with this a little

the example above, is that taking linear off as well?
thetheoryof: yes, sorry, forgot to mention that one!
Halcyon83: Heheheh, I'm pretty good at making them go blank..
sst: what's been said so far, i didn't realise the lts was now
thetheoryof: good intermezzo!
Halcyon83: Ooh, nevermind. Once the linear is gone, it works!
i have something like this now: halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar… halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar… params are coming soon

what about this one?

[The people indicated it was all right!]

okay
lucky me
The next step is actually the same as the one before. Just take out transform 2 (the yellow one), move it around and play with the variations till you get something you like.
In this case I only used the sinusoidal variation and set it to 0.75 (linear to 0 as the one before). I also enlarged the triangle to emphasize the squared shape inside the rotational.
this is what i get now: halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar… halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar… params will soon follow.

[Everything is fine now.]

sorry for wrong params and the confusion with it by the way

[The people say it's all good.]

thanks guys
Now, the third step is to add a new triangle. Just duplicate triangle 12 and again move around, tweak, use different variations, … until you like what you see. In fact, you can add as many triangles as you want. However, I myself prefer to keep it simple. Sometimes less = more.
Below you see I added a new transform (the purple one) and moved it around, but I kept linear with value 1. Afterwards, I played with the zoom, gamma, brightness etcetera until I got an image I thought was render-worthy. I then did a little postwork to enhance color and lighting.

halcyonsnaps.deviantart.com/ar…

as you people may have noticed, the secret lies in a lot of tweaking and using the right variations

It's a very pretty render.. Did you get that diagnal slash effect by rotating Transform 13?
this one was for banana-tree
ZephyrAnalea: that's right
Halcyon83: I actually like how the one I'm doing with my own variations and stuff is coming out...Usually tutes don't help you make your own stuff, just make the person's style.
Halcyon83: thanks
Meiresthai: i'm glad it helps you
djeaton3162: you missed a bit, i'll post the params a third time
Sorry. Duplicating transform 12 locked my system and I had to reboot.

okay, a lot of flooding... is everyone still alive?

[Everyone checks their pulses.]

does everyone understand what happened?
IM ok learning
Yes
I do
fractalyst: indeed it doesn't, cause i did some postwork
ahhh
yep
With previous information in mind and lots of practicing, you should all be able to create true rotational masterpieces. Be sure to experiment a lot as practice makes perfect. The trick of creating nice rotationals lies in the right variations mixed with a good triangle placement.
Halcyon83: Question about moving. What works best, manual or using control arrows? What setting on the arrows works best?
djeaton3162: i always move manual. i try moving the triangle as a whole, but also the angles
just till i like what i see
Halcyon83: Sooo, what happens when you drag out one from the center, such as if I moved triangle 5?
djeaton3162: Try manual, then arrows afterwards for fine-tuned tweaking
Halcyon83: with so many triangles, isn't it hard to "grab" the right one?
And of course, don’t forget about the holy trinity: color, lighting and composition. They play an important role in the outcome of the fractal.
Meiresthai: try it, i'd say. only one triangle wouldn't affect it much, but move 3 and you mess it all up
So, you can move every triangle if you wanted to?? Or do you need to leave a certain number in place to hold the rotation?
K
question - the 12 triangles, are they all the same just at slightly different angles, or are there some variations to them?
djeaton3162: What I noticed is that you can scale the triangle out, move it, then scale it back down a bit to grab a triangle
djeaton3162: yes it is, what i usually do is selecting one in the drop down menu, and then use arrows on my keyboard to just slip it away from the centre, then i can use my mouse again
How do you control lighting?
StitcherLadyxx: you do have to keep as much as possible
thetheoryof: the weights are the same, however the colors and symmetry are different
I gotcha
thetheoryof: all the same, with linear 1
thank you
Halcyon83: Any pointers on which tringles produce the best results to move or modify their variations?
BCNIKO: menu - view - adjust - rendering
Halcyon83: Oh, yes, do you ever change the weights around, or just leave them the way they are. What happens when you do change the weights?
Halcyon83: i have a philosophical question: what degree would you recommend rotating the triangles by to generate an acceptible rotationality to the image?
djeaton3162: 1 and 2, and the extra added ones
Meiresthai: i NEVER change weights
Halcyon83: Oh really? Do you know what happens if you do?
Ok , so it's gamma ,etc. . Just wondered if light could be directed to a certain point
mieresthai: I just changed one of the weights in the middle, and the whole thing got squashed
uewebawo: the degree i posted in my basic starter flame - if you go further, it'll mess up things. try using the animate script, you'll see what i mean
ZephyrAnalea: Heheheh, nicely done!
** JoelFaber has joined
Meiresthai: yeah, the influence of that particular triangle increases, but it spoils the outcome
Halcyon83: well, what degree is that if i wanted to make my own?
Meiresthai: It did look sorta cool though, so try messing around with them a little bit
or radians if you prefer
uewebawo: I made my own with just a random small incremented change in the degree. It doesn't seem to matter too much....
uewebawo: no idea to be honest. i'm not that much into the mathematical side of it all. i'd say, copy those params and analyze it. i don't know sh*t about maths
no seriously, i don't know the answer to that question, i'm sorry
: halcyon: I have to leave now ... will I be able to grab this conversation later,? thank you for this .. I learned a lot from this.
any other questions? is it clear to everybody?
I think I have it..
gitte: actually i'm going to upload the tutorial to my page, very very soon
think it comes down to working with it now, .. Thank you Halcyon83
Halcyon83: Where will the log of this be for future reference?
Got the basic idea.. I'll have to mess around with it a lot, though

Yes, the editing actually was. The 'out of bounds' stuff, the pulse checking, and Joel Faber.

You have to understand, Winter has been trying to get me in there for ages but I've been too scared cuz I feel so fractally stupid. So seeing that even you geniuses have a sense of humor makes me feel more comfortable about going in. My way of learning fractals was something like taking the pointy thing and moving it with the mouse...
