Description
This is Dionaea, the most unpleasant member of the Ascension crew. He\'s a Chlorotian, making him a member of a race of sentient plants. He has good reason, in his mind, for hating females, although he\'s learned to tolerate the one crewmember with two X chromosomes...up to a point. As his name implies (but only if you're a nerd like me) he's essentially a nasty tempered Venus Fly Trap.Chlorotians usually stick to one gender, but occasionally a genetic throwback will allow a male to shift into a female. This usually happens to a younger male without a family, and in such cases can be easily treated. However, in the event that it is a father that is so affected, he (now she) will defend her territory and destroy any rival females and her offspring. Dion\'s father underwent just such a change, and killed most of his own family. Knowing that it is likely he carries the same genetic defect, Dion tends to avoid females of any species like the plague, just in case something triggers a change.
Dion actually did undergo this change once, just after Phena discovered that she had a GenEdit clone named Fanta. Dion did not know that Fanta was on board, and running into what appeared to be (and for all intents was) a male Phena caused the change. Fanta escaped unharmed, but Phena, now seen as a rival female, was nearly killed by the Chlorotian. He succeeded in severely damaging her throat. Only prompt medical attention and the efforts of the rest of the crew saved Phena from losing her voice forever...or worse.
Dion may not like Phena, but he is loyal to the captain, the ship, and the crew, in that order. However, until he comes to accept someone, he reserves the right to get rid of them however he sees fit. He is like a thing gone mad when he fights, and it is difficult for him to back down in an argument.
His voice is kind of a hissing raspy tenor, so it's pretty obvious why Farrell gave him a "promotion" and put the girl with the pretty voice in the communications specialist position.
Anything else you want to know, let me know. I love talking about my characters and the world they live in.

It's great to see an alien that actually looks like an alien.
I adored reading your biography on Dion. It is so detailed but in a way that prevents boredom.
What does exocytosis mean? I don't hear that word very often. (I keep thinking it means he absorbs carbon dioxide at day time, while he absorbs oxygen at night, like many Earth plants do)

Exocytosis means he's a carnivorous plant. It refers to the digestive juices secreted in that type of plant.
And I'm flattered, thanks a lot.

Ah. Thank you for explaining it to me.
And no problem

I'm making a guess that he'd be fairly upset by fire. Haven't seen him in that situation before.

hmmm, that could be a rather... wicked retaliation for Phena.

She'll probably never think of it. Or if she did, he'd find a way to drop her into the aqueous section of the ship. She can't swim, and she's terrified of drowning.

huh, Kelv would've thought of that... but he wouldn't actually do it. although he might offhandedly say something like he was buying some napalm lotion for the plant if he was pushed far enough... not that he'd buy any...

I like Looking through your gallery now for ATC ideas, and Mr. Dion has now become a prime candidate!

Wow, interesting stuff. Sentient plants... Sooo, based on the background you've provided so far, I'm guessing the structure of their home organisation is closest to something out of Star Trek, yes? Also I take it this is just background info and Dion isn't likely to make an appearance in the Firewind himself, right?

They work for a company called CorrupCo (because I'm too lazy to come up with a good name). It's an amalgamated company that has it's fingers in anything it can, including tourism and delivery services. Certain types of ships are used for different jobs. The Ascension is a Cruise and Cargo ship, and therefore does double duty of hauling shipments from place to place and hauling people. For them, so long as a large portion of the proceeds goes back to CorrupCo, they can usually do as they please. Specific jobs, like "pick up this intern, you have to take her because we said so" are required. Also, because they're getting paid by the company (and what they gather from deliveries and hauling people around works something like tips, seeing as so much goes to the company), they have to abide by company policies.
Of course, one of them probably prohibits leaping through dangerous portals in the name of heroics, but clearly Farrell has other things on his mind. There are also certain areas that are restricted, and inspections that must be undergone on a regular basis. If the ship is in poor condition, the crew could be out of a job.
And Dion showed up in the audition. He and Sarreket and the rest of the crew have something else to do. If I get time, that is.

I see. That kinda set-up. Clearly you've put a lot of thought into this, though actually I was asking more about the internal hierarchy of the crew.

Farrell works as a low-level manager, so he's in charge of his crew but has to answer to higher-ups. Terrestrial crew is paid based on seniority and services, although they are often reminded that there are other forms of pay besides money (to make them all feel better about getting paid so little). The aquatic crew are paid somewhat better and for less work, because they are the engineering and maintenance crew. Anything they can't access in person is done via servo. However, they're all dolphins and are not quite as perturbed by low pay.
Basically, aside from seniority, the crew is pretty much on equal footing under the captain.
