I think taking a break between painting minis is a good thing.Β Keeps your mind in proper perspective for the ever-important real-life events.
I find that it can be motivating once you resume painting.Β It makes it something to look forward to and less of a chore.

As the story tells it. Experience. Grey hunter is a step up from being a Blood claw which is the first step on the path of being a Space wolf, there are other paths aswell, but the regular way to go is Grey hunter since not many are picked for Mars or is gifted in warp-powers.
In the tabletop game. Im guessing stats and cost ^^

The blood claws are a space wolf tactical unit, are young, inexperienced and angry they crave glory and approval of his wolf brothers. Compared to other chapters of marines space wolves scouts are selected directly from the ranks of the more experienced in combat grey hunters. Space Wolves are an unconventional astarte chapter.

If one uses the Space wolf books as a reference. it seems like they are selected from tribes. then trained inn surviving, melee and teamwork. Then they are injected with everything that make a space marine. extra heart etc... then after having their normal bodies changed into the iconic bulk of a space marine they are released into the wild with nothing (frozen planet, little too eat giant predators etc.. they have too make their way too the stronghold of the wolves. Some make it, some don't. Some of them might even turn into Wulfen and attack their would be allies. After that they are admitted into Blood claw packs. between 10-20 strong, these are never replaced when fallen so one pack never grows in number.
Not all space wolves make it past this stage.
They are melee specialists that charge their prey.
Grey wolves and Long fangs are the more "mature" type, they might lead packs or form own squads. they tend too use ranged weapons like standard bolters or plasma guns. Long fangs are just the heavy weapons squads. heavy bolters, lascannons etc...
And to answer your comment. they are seen as astartes when they are through with their initiation. (when the changes too their bodies are done) Then again the Blood claw are what you could call the space wolf equivalent of the scouts rank of other chapters.
