Description A dance fly (empis species), last evening shortly before sunset. It's a predator, hunting other small insects. Got stung in the hand by some mosquito while taking pictures of it! But I think it was worth it. Tried my luck without the flash again, because I hated the black background and ugly colors I was getting.

No cropping this time, it's the original frame. Just a bit of levels, resizing and the border.

nice capture, is this with a canon 100mm macro? i think stopping down another stop or two would help by getting the whole bug in focus without affecting the background.

Yeah, its the Canon 100mm. You're right, stopping down a bit more would have been better... but there wasn't much light and I didn't want to go to ISO 1600. This was hand-held, too, so I couldn't take a slower shutter speed...

The fly looks like a ropedancer and the solid background really makes it stand out. I think the composition could be improved, it looks too centered as it is.

Hmm yeah, tried some other formats tonight, some look a bit better... but I'll leave it for now. Usually I don't like centered subjects, either, I was just happy that I got a shot that looked ok without cropping, even if it could be better.
