Something I noticed from that scene in the episode.
Upon closer inspection of that scene, it may have been really that.... thing wasn't actually trying to attack Garnet or Steven, but rather trying to beg for help or something.

They will have difficulties controlling themselves, as a results it makes them look like a threat.
