Description
The "Temeraire" books, from Naomi Novik: Your standard dragonrider stories, set in Napoleaonic England. Which means that in addition to riders (Captains) dragons also have crews. An interesting concept, though Mrs. Novik was a little vauge as to how the 'harnesses' that held the crew actually worked... So, here's one artist's interpretation!Mrs. Novik was also a little vauge about describing the size of her dragons. Usually she just gave some reference like 'lightwieght,' 'middleweight,' or 'heavyweight.' But, based on her occassional mentions of crew compliment, the beastie shown here would be one of the smaller dragons.

That is an interesting concept. I like the detail that went into the harness. Adding the people was a nice touch.

Glad you like!
...But, of course, without the people, there wouldn't have been a drawing worth sketching. It'd just be a dragon wearing a bunch of pointless straps....

The Dragon Crew members wear some kind of straps do they?

Yeah. The straps are frequently mentioned, though never really dcescribed. I picture them being something liek what rock-climbers use today...

I love this! It's nice to see a visual representation of the harnesses. I always had trouble picturing them too, lol.

I still have a little trouble picturing how they work on the larger dragones, with crews on their belly... Anyways, glad you like!

I wonder how you convince a dragon to serve as a mount for so many.

Well, its a dragonrider type book. That means the dragons can speak, are intelligent, and have an enduring emotional attachment to their rider. They'll do just about whatever thier rider wants. And given their situation--the Napoleonic Wars going on and all--it only makes sense to have a crew...
