Norsulrusk had just come into this world. She was unhappy. She looked and looked for a people to raise up, and be worshiped by, but none of the creatures she had scene were worthy. Humans were puny. The deer and moose were puny. The wolves and the panthers and lions were puny. Even the bears, large and strong as they were, were too puny. She didn't even consider insects.
She wandered around the northern plains when she felt a presence. A large presence. The presence grew stronger. A herd huge, beautiful, strong, beast walked into view. These were not puny creatures. These are mammoths. These would be the Chosen People.
All of a sudden, there was a loud yelling. Three hunters ran at the mammoth, spears and torches raised, chasing the mammoths towards a cliff. Norsulrusk was furious that Her new people we hunted like animals, by such puny things as humans. Her body, previously shapeless and intangible, took form and grew solid. She glanced down at Her new body and was pleased. She was a strong mammoth, with thick fur the color of blood. She bellowed with Her new voice and charged towards the hunters, goring and killing the young men.
She turned to the leader of the herd, an old matriarch named Grumma. When the humans had attacked, Grumma hadn't panicked, unlike the others. She had instead stood her ground, trying to let the others escape, even when the new, red mammoth had appeared out of nowhere. Norsulrusk placed Her trunk upon Grumma's forehead, and rumbled.
"MY CHILD, I APPLAUD YOUR BRAVERY. NOT MANY WOULD BE WILLING TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIFE SO THAT THEIR FAMILY MAY SURVIVE. YOU SHALL BE MY FIRST PRIEST, AND YOU SHALL TELL YOUR PEOPLE, WHO I HAVE CHOSEN AS MINE, OF ME. YOU ARE ALREADY THINKING NEW THOUGHTS, AND YOU SHALL FIND THAT YOUR FAMILY IS DOING THE SAME. NEW THINGS ARE COMING INTO THE WORLD, AND THE GREAT ONES MUST BE READY. NO MORE SHALL PUNY BEINGS THREATEN YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, FOR ALL SHALL KNOW THE GLORY OF NORSULRUSK, THE OCHRE ONE, MOTHER OF THE MAMMOTHS"
