Here is my fourth stone sculpture, Maud Pie from the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I knew after watching this episode that there was no other character more appropriate for my next sculpture than the one obsessed with rocks, and I think she is my favorite new character from the last season.
I carved this one from Silvercloud Alabaster, which I found to be an excellent stone for carving. I felt like I had a lot of control while working this stone, as it was almost completely free of any imperfections and did not break apart unpredictably in large chunks, as I have experienced with some other alabasters that I have experimented with.
Maud measures about 5.25 inches tall, not including the wood base which is made of curly maple (almost 6” with the base), and about 4” by 9” at the base of the stone. She weighs about six pounds, down from almost 25 and a half pounds for the original rock I started with. This piece took about 56 hours of work over a period of a few months to complete.

you could leave this somewhere in a museum and no one would notice it doesn't belong there, I bet! really cool!

Before I had worked all the details into I had some people think I was making a sphinx.

I can't say that I know anything about stone carving, but it's well proportioned from what I can see and when I look at it I immediately see that it is Maud.
Also, depicting Maud in alabaster is simply perfect.
Great work!

It depends. This stone wasn't too difficult to work with and, as I mentioned, it was pretty easy to control when chiseling. You just have to be careful because, unlike with clay, what you take off you can't put back on if you mess up. This one came out pretty well though. On the other hand, I'm currently working on a piece of dark marble that is far harder to work with and has a tendency to break off in shards.
