Description
Fairly big file, sorry! D:I'm not great at this kind of thing, but I wanted to try anyway. It's kinda basic, but I think it's a decent method for something quick and fun.
Some things I wanted to point out...
The pencil, watercolor, marker, and sometimes airbrush are the tools I use the most in SAI. They're just the ones I like best. The pencil tool at full opacity is great for filling in flat color. Watercolor and airbrush are good for blending and smoothing, as well as filling in areas where you want soft color and shade variation. And great for quick yet interesting backgrounds.
In terms of composition, when cropping it's a good idea to crop more than just one side. For example just cropping at the feet tends to be a bit awkward, adding at least one more cropped edge to that usually makes for a better picture overall. Also you want to avoid cropping at joints.
And this isn't an ideal example of color. I was a little spontaneous with my palette choices. If you want help with color theory I'd suggest looking up a tutorial on that.
I hope someone finds this at least a little helpful!

Awesome! I enjoy seeing how people make these epic arts~
Seems like all the cool artists use SAI (or Photoshop) o3o Where do you get it...?

*nod* I use photoshop too. But the version I'm most used to is on my desktop compy which is old and doesn't run it very well anymore. And I have PS CS5 on my laptop, which I use, but SAI is just simpler and not as much of a memory hog. XD I tend to use PS more for final touches and editing, as well as for the screentones for Agen. But there's a TON of really awesome drawing programs out there.
Anyway I got SAI here: [link] It's about $65.... But there's a free month-long trial for it.

Yeah, I can see that. I have Photoshop on my old laptop, but said laptop is, well, old. Doesn't really work well anymore. I only have Corel Painter Essentials on the laptop I currently use, and since it's intended for making digital art that looks traditional, I find the brushes (actually, the whole program) immensely irritating. I just can't seem to get used to it! Figured I'd look into getting something else.
But... it seems that SAI won't work on a Mac? Darn, $65 is pretty good in my opinion for art programs. I really don't know what other programs to look at. :/

Ah yeah, I tried getting into Corel Painter for a while. But yeah, don't like it too much. It's a good program, and I guess if you spend enough time messing with it to figure everything out, you can do some pretty awesome stuff with it. But yeah, not really the style I want to work with.
Oh yeah, sorry I forgot about that! Yeah...it's just for PC. :/ I don't know if they're ever planning to make a mac version or what. And yeah it's definitely a good price for what you can do with it! Well sorry, that's too bad. Um... I know of a few other programs, although I've never used them personally so I couldn't give too much info on them... Like GIMP or IllustStudio, I think those are kinda similar to SAI or PS. I don't know anything about GIMP other than some people compare it to SAI. And all I know about Illuststudio is they tend to have ads for it in Style School magazine, but since they're in Japanese I can't read about it. XD *completely unhelpful*

Oh, you are being helpful! I had forgotten about GIMP, and I've actually never heard of the other. I'll definitely have to check them out! Thank you!

Awesome - thanks for sharing your process! Always cool to see how others work.
I'm also envious that you're able to keep that many layers straight - seems like once I get up to 3-4 layers, I lose track and starting painting randomly into them, lol.
Great picture too; your lines are fantastic and I like the choice of color!

I'm glad it was interesting! Have you been doing much with SAI? I remember there was a point when you wanted to get the hang of it a bit more...
Actually it took some practice to keep track of layers, 'cause I used to do the same thing. Naming each layer helps me. Not only is it easier to see what layer is where that way, but it's also like making a mental note of the layer order. It seems to improve my awareness even if I'm not fully paying attention to the layers in the midst of working....Kinda like saying a name back improves your chance of remembering it. Actually I don't know if that makes much sense... XD;
But anyway yeah, it's tricky. I do try to keep my amount of layers as minimal as possible. But at the same time I like having the freedom to go back and rework something without messing up something else.
And thank you! I wasn't really planning to make much out of this sketch, it was just a doodle... but I kinda liked the result of it, plus it was fun and it's been a while since I've ad a chance to just sit down and do something for fun.

Hehe, yeah, I'm still very interested in getting my SAI skills up to par... However, I've been distracted by good old pencils and paper the last few months. I've been doing a lot of sketching of just about everything, and a lot of remedial exercises in form/value and color theory. I'm going to get back into SAI soon though, it's so fast and responsive and the tools that blend remind me a lot of working with prismacolor pencils back in high school - which I love. Eventually, I'd like to replace Painter with SAI in my digital "artbox". Painter has become almost unusable, IMO.
Your layer method makes total sense - It's something I should be doing on all my pieces just to save me some headaches making edits.
