Description
Gonna try putting out GIFs and such of WIP stuff for the hell of it. I could not get the GIF to be any bigger then 500 frames, so had to drop it to 15 fps and cut off 6 seconds. Sorry about that. If you want a 30 fps video version, I can do that as well; just didn't see the point.
This is animation I have been working on for a video that has been in the works for far too long now. I only need to do some small hair refinement on this bit and I think this model is done. Still have a ways to go to completion, though. (completed now; link below)
The actual camera angle for the shot is not what the GIF uses, so the back mane looks a bit unnatural at one point, but that is because you aren't supposed to see it. Also, the eyes were un-derped here, but will be in the final. I had to play around with where the eyes are looking depending on the angle to make it look like she is looking where I wanted her to. Made it interesting
All hair, tail, wing and ear movement was manually created or refined. Jeez that takes forever.
Animatic for this portion created a while back: [Link to video]
And the completed video: [Link to video]

Well, I have never taken an animation class in my life. Completely self taught and have only been doing it for 10 months or so. Put your mind to something and you will amaze yourself.

how did you go about learning SFM, personally, I want to learn flash, but SFM is what got me into animation in the first place

Before I started messing with the software, I watched every tutorial that Valve has on their official SFM YouTube channel. From there, it was mainly just playing around and practice. I really push myself in terms of improving and take on ideas I do not thing I can actually do. Keep trying new things and challenge yourself with everything you make.
But it really just comes down to practice. The software starts to become second nature; as if it is an extension and things can be done as simply as you move your hand or bend a finger. This lets you transfer idea to reality with ease as you do not have to spend the time determining "how" you will do it.

Wow thanks! I've made a couple things using motion capture, but never hand done. The graph editor is what I really need to learn

New headcanon: Her derped eyes are actually just a neat trick she can do.

Most people do. I forced myself to watch tutorials before opening the software and took it slow. Was hard, but do not regret it.

I think it's your attention to detail that makes your models come to life in a way I don't often see in SFM animations. Seemingly little things, like the way Derpy's wings move throughout the GIF, just make the whole animation look more natural and believable. Well... as believable as tiny Technicolor horses can be, anyway.

I absolutely LOVE animating the wings. They are such a part of the model, but so often left untouched. I feel that a pegasus would use them no different then an arm when it comes to showing emotion, so try to convey that.

You're too good at SFM. It's incredible. I wish I could find something wrong, but it all just looks so flawless (don't stop improving though).

I can point out a few flaws lol, but most are due to the camera angle used for the GIF. The final version will look better. Hell, I have already added some extra animation to it after making this. OCD ftw

OCD can definitely be a helpful tool in some cases. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience to have OCD with my art

Making these characters look lifelike takes A LOT of movement animations! This GIF looks great, hope to see the actual video soon.

I'm not used to seeing Derpy not... derped. XD
I'm sure that comes later in the process.

She is derped in the video, but the eyes are constantly shifted up and down depending on what side of the face is visible. If the face is seen head on, then the eyes will split. For the GIF, the random shifting was a bit... disorienting, so I replaced it with normal eyes.

Blayaden In reply to argodaemon [2013-11-16 03:09:06 +0000 UTC]
Never occurred to me that you'd need to program the "derp" in Derpy's eyes. I guess it makes sense to replace it then... And if it was disorienting for you, imagine poor Derpy! XD
Great job! ^^

argodaemon In reply to Blayaden [2013-11-16 03:12:13 +0000 UTC]
It isn't programmed in; the textures for the eyes are actually made to be separated. But that does mean that when the eyes are locked to a target, you do not have a specific eye looking right at it. From a profile view, this gives the illusion that Derpy is looking either too far up or down. Hence, I have to animate the eyes to adjust for this so the 1 eye you do see is actually looking right at the target. There are times when I jump between using derped and non-derped eyes just to make the process easier.
