I tend to layer more colours a lot, so there are a lot of different pencils used to build up to the right shade. I also find that its important to look at the photo closely to see what the actual colours are, rather than what you expect to see as the two can be quite different sometimes! If you look at my other portraits, you can see a good example of this in the portrait of "Jules" especially. That was a Golden Retriever with a very pale coat and the reflections off it were actually blues and silvers, which are completely counter-intuitive colours to use when drawing a Golden Retriever!
