4 hours. Pencil, black Sharpie, Prang colored pencils, and then Adobe's brush tool for the background.EDIT: I went back and used Adobe to color in the rest of the picture. Given this is my first time using a mouse to color a picture....be kind. I did well to get this far.
Newest Edit: Added shading in Photoshop.
For the record, coloring a background in with a mouse is a wretched experience for me; my hand shakes too much. I also figured out layers only after I did this. As a result... please don't look at this in full view.
Gaara from Naruto ch. 249, p. 9. This is one of my favorite panels in the manga and favorite scenes in the anime. I drew it directly from the original panel, inch by inch. And I think I used half an eraser. Forgive me, but I have little experience with drawing and will need to do some severe imitation for a while.
Gaara belongs to Kishimoto Masashi and this scene is copyrighted to him and Shonen Jump. No infringement is intended and no profit will be made. I'm just practicing drawing and coloring here.

I'm not that much of an anime appreciator, but I'd like to give you some help on colouring (I have never done that before yet, but it can't be hard). Just read through a few pen tool and line art tutorials, here are a few that are very good:

I hope my help is wanted, somehow I see much potential in this picture.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the tutorials; maybe one will be good. I find most tutorials, especially the official ones for Adobe, to be terribly written because they make too many assumptions about the reader. What I really need is one for a beginner, seeing as how I've only been using Adobe to color for about 3 months. Not to mention my version of Adobe is really old and seems to be . . . slightly out of step with the DA tutorials I've found. But, hey, maybe I'll get lucky this time.

Though, if you didn't know, I'd like to point out that Gaara is actually supposed to be looking at Kankuro in this shot. ^^
I myself didn't notice that until I drew my second picture of this scene in my sketch book.
But it doesn't matter. It looks good anyway! ^^

Thanks for the heads up; that's easily fixed. (Yeah, the shading in the manga version makes it look the other way around, although I did notice the curve that suggested it was otherwise. Still, shading the white of the eye? He should have shaded the iris instead. I realize there are shadows, but still... it looks weird in b&w that way.)

Yes, the shading in the manga was a bit confusing for me too. I only realized the difference after watching the japanese version of that episode. ^^

Ooh, cool! This turned out really well! And you got the clouds looking really precise too, especially for working with a mouse (which does stink; I had to do that skycat picture before I got my tablet and I was twitching by the end).
