Description Imagine that you were a factory worker living in a Midwestern town. Perhaps in Ohio or Michigan, maybe Wisconsin. You worked hard at your union job alongside people of several different races and backgrounds. It paid well. You judged people based on their deeds, not the color of their skin or any other external quality. If people were honest and hardworking, you liked them, and if not, no. You are a white man, but you don't judge people based on their race, creed, or origin.

You and your wife made enough money for a house, two cars, and had plenty of cash left over to raise two children. You weren't rich, but you made ends meet and had some money to save. You were and still are religious, with roots in the US going back at least a century, perhaps more. You consider yourself to be patriotic, decent, and on the whole, those are words which describe you and your town pretty well.

Then things began to change. Your town's factory shut down. You had to take a job at a store which paid a fraction of your previous wages. Many people left your town, the tax base withered, and your infrastructure crumbled. The schools got worse. Crime went up. You legitimately feared for your children's safety and security. You were forced to send them to a school you didn't want them to go to because of actual fears about violence, but when you complained, they called you a racist. They called you a lot of things, in fact. When you complained about outsourcing, they called you a xenophobe. When you took offense to violent minority gangs, they called you a racist. When you bought a firearm for protection and continued to go to church, they mocked you, saying that you "clung to guns and religion."

"They" happened to be the democratic party. The same people whose economic policies helped close down your factory, ruin your schools, and insulted you for objecting to the abuse you suffered through. Calling mostly decent people "deplorable" only got them to hate the democrats. Pandering to immigrant communities while ignoring the plight of the population who was already there was sure to backfire sooner or later. It just did.

They don't need to be secular in belief; they just need to deal with things in a secular manner.

This isn't the USSR. The president can be religious or non religious as he wants to be in America. Again, if you don't like it, too bad.

That is up to the voters (and electors who have to follow them) to decide. And by "secular", you probably mean to say "atheist." It doesn't matter how much you want a godless president. It just won't happen in this country. Not in this day and age, at least. Probably never.

If you mean that by its general term, then just about all of our presidents have been secular. As in "not members of the clergy."

Only two or three founding fathers were deists: Jefferson, Franklin, and maybe one other. The rest were Christian.

Aristodes In reply to GodsofWarAndRock [2016-11-12 21:18:51 +0000 UTC]

First, don't shift the topic.

Second, we are a Christian nation in the sense that most of us are Christian, but not in the sense that the government is legally-bound to follow the precepts of Christianity or of any religion, or none at all. The government is neutral in regards to religion, not opposed to it or endorsing it. It is up to individuals to decide what religion they follow.

Most of the founding fathers were Christians. Only a few were deists. Why are you still arguing? This isn't a matter of debate. It's an established fact.

Are you mentally ill? I explained what that means. We are not constitutionally Christian, but most of the population is Christian. You need to understand this. Are you trying to say that a Christian should not be president? If so, that's biased.

If Clintoris won, then living in America would suck because what you say or do will get you ridiculed. For instance, following Christianity would make others frown at you. I don't like the concept of political correctness, because of the possibility you'd offend someone with every little thing you do. Plus, going to a school where you have to learn the correct opinions and not think outside the box sounds like hell. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Trump cares about all American citizens regardless of race or gender, and that's pretty cool.

PS, I wrote 2 journal entries on who I support during the election.

darthmaul90 In reply to Aristodes [2016-11-14 16:34:26 +0000 UTC]

I've never really been what you might call a "closet Trump supporter."  Most of my friends here on DA know that I'm a Republican, I've almost always voted Republican (1992 being the only exception, I voted Independent in that one) and I will continue to vote Republican because it is the party I believe in even if I don't always believe in, or believe, what they say.

My good friends here have pretty much known since day one that I'm a Trump supporter and, for the most part, they haven't held that against me.  Which is good because I never held against them the fact that they were Hillary supporters.  I didn't like it, but I accepted that they had a different point of view than I did.  That's fine.  That's wonderful.  That's what makes democracy work.

And the people who bash Republicans as sexist and misogynist and all these other things make me laugh because it so ridiculous and baseless, it's mind blowing.

Sexist?  My wife will tell you I am the least sexist person she knows.  Now she's kind of biased to that because she's my wife and I get that.  But we've been together now for 13 beautiful years.  Our anniversary, believe it or not, happened to fall on election night this year.  And not that long ago, my wife went on a five day cruise with our oldest daughter without me because I didn't have an updated passport at the time (I do now).  That whole time, I felt like I was dying inside because my life partner, the woman that I have sworn my heart and soul to for eternity, was not with me.  That's a terrible feeling even if you know it's only temporary.

Racist?  I'll admit that I'm white.  I'm proud to be white.  My wife is Asian.  I belong to a local model railroad club.  Some of the best friends I have through that club and just the local model railroad community are African-American or Hispanic or whatever.  One of my best friends on this very site is African-American.

Misogynist?  My wife makes double what I make in a year and I work in sales.  I've always encouraged her to reach for the stars and never settle for less that what she wants.

Homophobe?  I know several gays.  I know they're gay.  They know I'm not.  And it works because we respect each other.

Xenophobe?  My wife was born and raised in the most oppressive socialist society the world has ever seen... the Soviet Union.  And when I say the Soviet Union I don't mean Russia.  I mean the Soviet Union.  This is why my wife voted Republican in this election.  Although she's been here for 13 years now (I brought her here on a K-1, Fiancee Visa) this is the first Presidential Election she was able to participate in as a citizen of the United States (though not the first election over all.  She did vote for our governor two years ago).  During those 13 years she has come to the conclusion the Democratic Party is frighteningly similar to the old Communist Party of the Soviet Union.  She does not want that influence here.  She came here to be an American and to be my wife and she has lovingly embraced both.

Islamophobe?  I work for a Muslim.  Most of the people in the company I work for are also Muslim because they members of his family.  The fact that I can't stand my boss has nothing to do with his religion.  It everything to do with his management style, which sucks because he doesn't know how to delegate responsibility.  On top of that, even though my wife was never a real practitioner of the Islamic faith, she was in fact, born Muslim.  These days she identifies more with Christians than Muslims and if you ask her what religion she is now, she'd probably tell you she's an Agnostic.  But she was born Muslim.

This is who I am but you'll never see me or my wife on CNN because we do not conform to what the mainstream media's standards are for a Republican.  I'm not a sexist, a racist, a misogynist, a homophobe, a xenophobe or an Islamophobe.  But I am a Republican.  And I proudly voted for Donald Trump.

DONALD TRUMP, 2016!  MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN... FOR ALL AMERICANS!

Even if Trump turns out to be horrible, even if he turns out to be worse than Hillary, which is unlikely at this point, the left has no-one to blame but themselves.

For every action is an equal and opposite reaction.
