Description So! I've finally gotten around to drawing a new ref for DJ. I never liked the anatomy in the old one.

I think she's also about 10 years old now. (the Gemhorn dragons came first)

Pretty basic, I think, finally have a proper size reference. The size on the old one well, I really didn't calculate it correctly, so it's all wrong. She's so big I have nothing to really get relative sizes from, other than some dinosaurs.

Drawn and colored in openCanvas 3, but text and such was done in Photoshop

Very nice dragon ref you have here, Armaina! It's smooth, hip and has nice tones all around.

But I have some critiques for it, as I found some things that just kind of put me off a little bit.

The horns on the forehead are kind of, like, just there and not really connected to the rest of it. I also think of the wing muscle is a little off. I think you should go talk with =Shinerai or =Aiyume about that; two very good buddies of mine xD I think if you asked they'd be more than happy to show you a way to better that wing muscle there. Or I could do it, really is up to you.

Next, I like the fact you made the top of the wing to be POPPING right out at us. That is so cool, I love that effect~ But again, the wing arm is too to chubby and could do with a reduce-ment of width.

Next are the scales. I think giving them more depth would've added the feeling of them being more...realistic. All of the scales could do with that, all the way from nose to tail huh?

The tail and tail spikes are nice, but need more depth like I said before. Where is your light source, by the way...?

I think the feet are nice, but they need to be placed flatter on the ground and facing forward, not to the side or some type of strange angle like you have here. It's like, to me, the dragon is going to fall over. :/

I think, otherwise, adding more details about who this character is and more, all around, meat of the background and type of creature it is would really make this stand out more as a fleshed out character instead of just a doodle. It may be in your head, but to others we really don't get who this is; what's the history? Is this a story behind the character?

etc.

Regardless~ I like it very much! <3

I'll agree that the wing muscle is not 100% accurate, though I need to get some good bird/bat references for the inside of the wing and then from there, figure out how to define it more accurately for a larger creature. Though I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the wing being too chubby? (IMO most artist draw dragon wings too thin, and when you consider the HUGE size of this dragon in particular, thin fingers/membrane would be disastrous)

Eh, the shading was super fast, I was trying to emphasize the uh... metallic-ness? So I didn't really give it much thought. I'm no great at metallics, it's something I need to practice. (otherwise the rest of it is just flat colored and isn't intended to be shaded, much like my other refs)

haha I need to practice feet so bad, on like, everything. I can never get my weights right :/ And about the scales, I will fully admit I was lazy when I did them because I didn't much care to spend hours detailing scales on something that was supposed to be a simple reference.

You can find stuff about her here:

Mind you she's more of a symbolic character than a story character heh. I just didn't write it all in the description since I figured I've talked about her enough over the years haha.

But believe me, I will take it into consideration when I have the time to do another ref, likely when I get her human ref done as well.

Awesome anatomy on this. I like how the wings are shaped more like a second pair of hands made for scooping the wind and air, as they should be, touched with a bit of the ruggedness that is inline with the style of the dragons body.
