"SAWWING's hard carapace evolved to protect it from the debris of the dying trees it likes to snack on. It's teeth are likened to two chainsaws moving independently of each other, which allowing it to chomp through them in less than an hour."

i mean, it sorta looks like a cocoon stage to me so yeah. just not sure how the design for it would look

Fair.
It’s just a shelled beetle rather than a cocoon, but I can totally understand why it resembles cocoonage.
If I introduce Megas or something similar it definitely gets one of those.

I feel like it could very convincingly evolve into an alligator bug.

I definitely don’t disagree, as it is what the line is based off of.
I imagine this fella would tilt sideways to attack.
If you haven’t already tilt your head sideways and look at it, it actually resembles two alligator heads. (You probably already noticed that though)

Tbf when the idea popped into my head (fully formed I might add) it’s was almost too abstract for me.
There were a few more literal versions, but this was the OG one.
It actually came before BUGATOR (which was the original name for this one). I retrofitted that lil fella to work with the original concept.
