I was thinking about genetically modified food (a controversial topic) while painting this. In this scenario genetic engineering went a bit overboard so that the landscape is overrun with apples, at the expense of everything else. This was the first time I ever painted fruit, so I guess I made up for it. The apple seems to have become a potent symbol over the years. Initially I thought of including Adam and Eve waste deep in apples but I thought that might be a bit of a cliche'. I've never been strongly religious anyway. I'm not really against genetic engineering, in fact it might have a lot of benefits if applied to humans.Related content

i love themes like this! everyone should see it. i live in a farming town and all the farmers voted for geneticly modified seeds. the non farm,ing part of our community voted against because of health concerns. i guess the farmers won because of the mother dollar. the huge teat of wealth that has its own price.

I think this painting is so interesting - all of your work is interesting and thought provoking!!! It makes me think of many things abut our 21st Century world! Wal-mart, of course, but also a lack of balance that we have. If the media tells us that it is healthy to eat more of a certain type of fish, so many people eat that fish that it becomes almost extinct while there are many other fish in the sea. Or if Doctors tell us to drink plenty of water, there are people who drink so much water that they almost die!!! That happened to someone on a bike race that my husband rode in. What is 'enough', what is 'too much'?

It really is lovely how long did it take you to plaint all those apples. Its seems hard to take any shortcuts with that...

I think it took me about a week to paint all the apples, or maybe ten days. I only remember with certainty that I started painting it on a Saturday.
