A roar of approval came from the back part of the crowd, and Deerling stood a little bit taller as her fur returned to its normal color and the excess water streamed down to the ground in little rivulets. Still, the smile from earlier had faded, and she looked around warily as she watched for any signs of attack from the pokémon that surrounded her.

Her vigilance proved in vain. The cheers of the valley natives died down suddenly as a monferno burst out from where she'd been lurking behind some of her buddies. Before Deerling could react, a powerful mach punch had knocked her down to the ground; in another moment, Monferno's foot was at Deerling's neck, pressing down hard enough that it was clear that she was having difficulty breathing.

Out of the corner of his eye, Max suddenly saw sparks flying from somewhere among the trees. "Why that dirty rotten-"

"Hush, Joltik!" Max heard Braviary interrupt. "We wait for the right moment to strike! If we attack now, Monferno might just kill her before turning to deal with us. Let's wait and see if there's a better moment."

Max was surprised to hear the guildmaster being so level-headed for once. I guess he wouldn't be guildmaster if all he had was brute strength. But right now, I agree more with Joltik than him. We can't just leave that deerling like that! Max's fear wasn't gone, but it was battling with his anger and indignation for supremacy. For now, the fear still won out, and he waited for Braviary's signal to attack.

There was a tense silence for a while as monferno pressed down ever harder. It wasn't until Deerling had nearly passed out that Monferno finally let up a bit and, in a voice loud enough for all to hear, said, "You know, Deerling, I thought you had wizened up a bit when you started purposefully throwing the battles. I thought you'd learned your place. What changed?"

Deerling coughed a bit and said something too softly for Max to hear. Whatever it was, it made Monferno's tail flare up with rage. Snarling, she moved her tail and put the still-blazing tip right up to Deerling's fragile ear, causing her to cry out in pain.

"Well, then, I think we've had enough of this little jokester," the Monferno shouted above the deerling's shrill scream. "Right, boys?"

All the other of the other invaders yelled in unison, working themselves into a frenzy of bloodlust. Max unconsciously ruffled his feathers as another wave of anger washed through him, but he still didn't have the guts to jump out and help, especially without Braviary's signal. Guildmaster, how long until you-

A giant blur of multicolored feathers suddenly soared out of the trees and straight over the crowd, answering Max's question before he could fully think it. Monferno just barely managed to roll out of the way in time to avoid the grasp of the braviary's heavily muscled talons. Making the best of his miss, Braviary landed next to Deerling and, as Kara jumped off and made her way over to her injured friend, he called out, "All right, guildmembers! Let's show these brutes who's boss!"

*************************************************

I'm so freaking proud of how this one turned out. Sure, the background's a bit meh, but it's okay. Sure, All of the minor monkeys and all the minor onlookers were drawn in about a minute or two each, and if we're going by the text (which we are) there should be a lot more in the crowd.

But Monferno, Deerling, and the four pokémon up front... Dear Arceus, I was so happy with how they ended up looking. ^_^ Monferno and Deerling were SO TINY, but I still made them look good, and this is considering that I never get leg anatomy right on horses, deer, etc. And the other four were just awesome in general. Not without their flaws, but those flaws were relatively minor.

So yeah. Best pic yet, methinks. Maybe.

Ah~, I forgot about these now that I'm reading this again! This is pretty epic, and pretty much JUST like how I pictured it in my head while I was reading it! Braviary in this picture is just EPIC. That shading is amazing, and I agree that Deerling looks incredible, especially considering how far away she is. Max himself is also pretty awesome. Love the beak shading! ^_^

Lol, I'm finally getting to reading all these comments on here and fanfiction.net... it's been a busy week or two for me. But yeah, thanks! This was my favorite picture of all the ones I did for the fic, I just think it turned out best.

I agree that it's the best pic yet! So colorful, and the shading's nice, especially of the grass in the foreground. The colors are certainly a contrast from the red image of last chapter. And the four in the front are beautiful; Braviary and Max-definitely not the easiest angle.

Max reminds me of myself quite a bit at times. Hesitating to interrupt a conversation, the self-doubt, his final quote--these are things I can actually relate to. I want to hug him or something! >_<

I bet this is a coincidence, but I noticed that the middle stage of fire-type starters are bullies. Hahaha!

An evolution!? Hmmm... Seems to be triggered by emotion? A warm emotion maybe? Defenders of warmth? And... the monkeys invading Sheltered Vale because their home was destroyed by cold? Could this be a reason for the title? I wonder. It's seriously getting me thinking. I'm excited!

Oh yeah, as I was reading this chapter, I couldn't help but think about "The Price of Power". A group of a dozen pokémon traveling and heading into battle, with said group including a female (obviously) Nidorina, a male Luxio, and a female Vibrava. Haha, speaking of Luxio, I loved his grinning and bumping into Max while comparing Deerling to him! Fun guy. And I thought you handled his disappointment at Max very well.

I did not know Deerling could learn Camouflage! Makes sense, though. I love the use of unconventional attacks in stories! It really helps to keep things interesting. And looks like it's spring now.

Guildmaster Braviary's awesome!

Oh, you spelled Primeape as Primate when Joltik was explaining the mission to the guildmembers.

And... you asked for some PMD fics? I remember reading one (well, most of it; not sure if it was updated with the final chapters) a long time ago: "Spanning Time" by Gorsecloud. Also, there's one I haven't read, though I've heard good things about: "Silver Resistance" by ScytheRider, I think.

Glad you're liking Max! I think he's been turning out well so far, which I'm excited about. And I also like that his major problems (primarily, keeping his friends at the guild) are quite a bit less serious than those of Cody and Vulpix. It's nice to write about a human who isn't constantly thinking about why he might be here and how he can get home.

I noticed the middle-stage fire starter thing after I began writing this chapter. To be honest, I think it might just be that I really have a thing for the middle stages of starters. They all just look so scrappy, and they have such great designs. And fire-types just make for perfect bullies. ^_^

Lol, I never thought of the similarities between this and "The Price of Power"... Good times, good times. That was such a fun RP. Nidorina is just in this chapter 'cuz I love Nidorina (another example of a scrappy middle-stage), and Vibrava is in there because I needed someone who knew dragonbreath, which Max will henceforth be attempting to learn. I don't actually remember a Luxio in the The Price of Power, though.

And yup. It's Spring. I actually had to think about this at first, because seasons take on more or a role later.

I've heard about "Silver Resistance" too, actually. I'll definitely have to take a look at it. And I'll look around for "Spanning Time" as well. Thanks for the suggestions! And thanks for all the comments! ^_^

Yes! I love the middle stages! I always feel like they're underappreciated.

Ah, the main role the luxio played was so that my team could demonstrate their quicksand combo. And it seems like dragonbreath would suit Max's cowardly nature nicely.

Seasons playing an important role? I wonder if Emma (and Kara) will as well.

^-^
