Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Defenders of WarmthExcerpt from Chapter Nine: Max

Location: Redstone Canyon
He opened his beak a breathed outward, releasing a small stream of something purplish that was not quite fire, but not quite anything else either. It went maybe ten feet into the cave and lasted only a few moments.
Yet the briefness of the technique wasn't due to any lack of ability on his part; the stream could've been maintained as long as he had breath. Rather, the moment his dragonbreath lit up the cave, he saw something shift from within the depths, just barely within the range of his dragonbreath's light. As soon as the violet light fell upon it, it dashed forward, a murderous expression lighting its eyes.
It was all Max could do to let out an alarmed squawk before the assailant was upon him.
Max dodged, staying just within the entrance of the cave as he instinctually swung out with a wing as a counter-attack. He wanted to run, but he reasoned that he didn't know whether or not the pokémon attacking him was a real threat to him or not. Max was by no means weak, and he was quite capable of holding his own against strong pokémon so long as he didn't have to fear for his life; there was a decent chance that Max would be able to deal with this pokémon, fast though it seemed to be.
By some miracle, Max's wildly-aimed wing attack hit the speedy attacker, who immediately jumped back into the shadows where Max couldn't see him.
But Max had caught a glimpse of his assailant in that moment his attack had hit. And that one glimpse was enough to make his will to fight disappear. That green body that towered over him, the sheer speed of the assault, those twin scythes – there could be no doubt about it.
This pokémon was Edge the scyther, infamous among the guilds for his ruthless battle style and his tendency to leave as many of his victims dead as he left alive.
"Max! MAX! Are you all right? What's happening?" Zeke shouted, his voice echoing within the cave walls.
Max didn't have a chance to respond. The scyther leapt out of the shadows and attacked again. The scyther was closer than he had been before, and Max didn't have time to properly dodge the incoming edge of the scythe. Panicking, he did the only thing he could think to do. He lowered his beak to meet the scythe, shielding his more vulnerable body.
There was a clang as the hard steel met the solid beak, jarring both the attacker and defender with the force of the impact. Tears of pain streamed from the archen's eyes as he took a couple steps back out of the cave. He couldn't see the top of his beak, but it definitely felt as if even the tough beak had been no match for the blade; the pain was intense enough that it felt almost as if it must've cracked.
"Max!" Zeke shouted again; Max caught sight of him trying to scramble up the cliff side to help. "Max! Get down here so I can help!"
The archen didn't have the time to get back down, at least not in a safe way. Even with the help of his wings, Max didn't trust himself to drop down without misjudging his momentum and hurtling into the river far below.
And – more importantly – Edge was already coming back for another attack.
Max sidestepped away from the cave mouth, blinking back the water in his eyes as he turned and ran, digging his claws into the rock as he tried to keep himself moving quickly without falling.
He heard a buzz, and glanced behind him to see the scyther quickly gaining, his wings beating the air as they both lent speed to the bug's feet and helped him to keep his balance.

So... I spend literally 30 minutes trying to teach myself cat anatomy and, more specifically, how to draw a cat running (although, sadly, the black fur makes it difficult to see the outlines of the back legs, which took the most figuring out... 'cuz cats are weird). Then I spend roughly thirty seconds on the background, without even looking up a canyon reference image. And I don't realize how bad of an idea this is until the end... Though in all, I think I'm finding that I just hate such uniform backgrounds in general. And backgrounds in general. And the perspective ended up a bit weird, too, but at least it's not as bad as last chapter. ^_^
Anyway, sorry that this is so late. And I'm even more sorry that I didn't get a chapter out this past Thursday; college is busy. Hopefully, this week will be better. I'm a bit into it already, and it's going well so far.
In other news, how about that Kyurem/Black 2/White 2 announcement?

You know, this is yet another image that looks just like how I imagined it while reading. What with the really small cliff face and Max being all like, "SQUAWK, RUN WITH YOUR WINGS UP LIKE A LITTLE PANSY!!!". xDDD
Those Luxio muscles. Somehow, it reminds me of The Lion King. Mufasa~

I think that all-caps quote more or less captures Max's entire character early on in the story. ^_^

I think you did a good job with Luxio there. Cat anatomy (or any quadruped anatomy, in my opinion) is tough to figure out, especially when you're trying to work with different poses. And backgrounds...ugh. Cliff faces are hard to draw so that they actually look like cliff faces. But yay for thirty-second backgrounds!
I really love how your writing really gets me to think. When Zeke (yay for his forgiveness!) evolved, I was really surprised. I thought about the similarities between this evolution and Kara's, and the first thing I came up with was the fact that the evolvers were rushing in to save a friend's life. Maybe it has something to do with inner warmth--the comforting warmth of friendship or the fiery passion of doing something to save someone. Then, wait... both evolutions happened during Max's chapters! Could he maybe be the key? And sure enough, Zeke pointed this out later. And it was brought a step further by tying it in with the fact that Max was a human. Now, this really got me thinking. If it's true that a human must be nearby for evolution to occur, then I wonder about Vulpix and Cody. Keeping in mind your fondness of ivysaur, could this be foreshadowing Sage's evolution? Only time will tell. Ah, and Emma as well! Does she have this ability too? Maybe a pokémon can only evolve when trying to rescue an ex-human. Oh, and I just had another thought--the only pokémon to evolve were electric-types; does this mean that only electric-types can evolve?
And Edge makes another appearance? Just who is this mysterious assassin? I have a feeling that Team Misfits may have to encounter him sometime.
Ehehe, Guildmaster Braviary's tendency to blurt things out loudly, combining forces with Fum's gossipy nature. Now everyone knows! How would Vulpix and Cody (and Team Misfits for that matter) take this news? Will Vulpix let Sage know her secret? This should be verrrrrrry interesting. I think I know at least someone who would think Max is crazy... Actually, I'm quite curious about how Guildmaster Elgyem would react to this revelation. And yes, what's the worst that could happen? Not ominous at all.

Hey, college does get busy, so I definitely don't blame you. I don't expect you to be some kind of machine, cranking these out like clockwork, so it's perfectly fine with me. ^-^
And Black & White 2!? afjlkajfsnauercuenr! I got so excited when I heard the news! I wonder if they're really true sequels.

Yeah, I think I'm finally getting the hang of anatomy in general, slowly but surely.
And I won't say anything about most of the questions you brought up, but I will say that it's coincidence that it was two electric types who evolved. And as for if all the other humans can do it... Seems odd that Max has done it twice and the three other humans not at all, huh? I suppose only time will tell.
Edge is indeed back, and still not any less mysterious than before. If there was any doubt about it in his intro chapter (when he ran away without getting caught and became a named character...), you can definitely bet that he'll have a role to play now.
And how will everyone else react? Guess we'll just wait and see. ^_^
And Black and White 2... Just the fact that Game Freak is doing something different for once is super exciting! And I second the "true sequel" part. That would be wonderful. Of course, it seems like Gen V is being very rushed now... What could Nintendo have in mind? Just making it a short generation? Or maybe (as I hope) they're going to do a combined game that's like a sequel to the sequels! Maybe for 3DS... Which might just be wishful thinking on my end, but still.

Yeah, kind of expected that most of those questions wouldn't be answered. They were just me thinking to myself anyways, and I bet would be spoilerific. But yeah, it is strange that only Max has been able to do it so far. It may very well be that Max is the only one with this ability. Or... it could be another condition that happened to be fulfilled in Max's presence. Hmmm... what a mystery!
And regarding Black and White 2, I wonder how it would work if they really are true sequels. Black and White did leave us with a sort of ending that could be continued, but would these second games start in the beginning, and add some extra post-game material? Or would they continue where the first games left off? In that case, I don't think beginning with a level 5 starter would work out right. How would the beginning pan out? Or maybe I'm not thinking out of the box. These are definitely exciting times, though! Who knows what will happen next!

My favorite theory about BW2 (which is my own theory) is that, if it is in fact set up like a direct sequel, you start out with an entirely new character traveling through the region and fighting Ghetsis and whatever he's up to. Perhaps the main character from B/W has disappeared for some reason, which always seems like a good premise for a follow-up story (Yellow with Red's disappearance in PokéSpe, yes?). But in reality, it's way too early to tell. But as you said, exciting times!!!!

Ahaha! A PokéSpe-inspired plot!? Yes! That would be awesome!
