When people refer to GUNNM/Battle Angel Alita they tend to refer to the two manga series (Battle Angel Alita/Battle Angel Alita: last Order). Which are totally worth looking into as they are one of the masterpieces of the Cyberpunk fiction genre. The manga pretty much single-handedly got me into Japanese graphic novels and animation, all from the cover of the first volume Rusty Angel.
Sites like MangaFox and Manga Reader have both series out if you want to give them a swing.
