Merrick doesn't know of his parents, he doesn't really care, he was raised by a fisherman who took him in.
His reason for joining the fight is he wants justice for his people who were killed by the Shinigami.
While Merrick's allegiance lies with the Quincy, he himself doesn't seem to buy into everything they're told. He will look into things himself usually to make sure he's getting nothing but the truth of the matter whatever it may be.
His hate for shinigami comes from the fear of them he had as a child, not being able to do anything and just knowing his people were slaughtered. He views them as those who kill with no remorse or thought. However that all may change when he and his squadron capture a shinigami...
