A classic theme of our modern era. In the past you had your crucifixions, odalisques, cupids, men on horseback, bathers, ballerinas, depictions of heaven and hell, the Sphinx, Madonna and child, Venus, Leda and the Swan... Often one will hear the postmodern argument that nothing new can be said or depicted, my counter argument to which is: when was the cut-off point? Was it after Shakespeare but before Picasso? And hasn't it already been said before that everything has been said before? I think there is an abundance of possible new imagery, approaches and techniques available to contemporary artists, and "painting" or "image making" is only as "dead" as one's imagination. One only need to look to music, which is constantly evolving to answer the questions of whether it's all been said and done before. Like the sustain on Nigel Tufnel's guitar in Spinal Tap: "it just keeps goin'."
So here you have a classic contemporary theme rich with graphic sensationalism, blood and gore, horror, humor, popular culture, conspiracy theory, and even the objectification of the alien "other". In the wrong hands it's an unbearable cliche, but I hoped to transcend the topic by infusing it with meaning and substance. Periodically I do internet searches for other's depictions of the subject, but I humbly offer that my own treatment is the best one out there so far.

In a way, all of reality is imagined in the first place, and thus imagination can improve upon it.

I like your approach to the topic. I often get this feeling that there is no room for originality in our world anymore, but works like yours keep convincing me that I'm wrong. Amazing artwork, though saddening a little, but causing emotions is what art is meant to do with people.

Thanks, and I'm glad you got the element of sadness to it, and didn't just take it on the level of gore. I'm sure there's tons of originality out there, but it seems that mediocrity and conformity get more rewards and recognition, at least in the short run, which is often the way it's been (look at Van Gogh. Nobody gave a shit about his work when he was alive.)

I don't care much for this art style, but I suppose it was well done.

I wonder what art style it is. I'm not sure there's that much else like it out there, in terms or either content or execution. But if you don't like the style, that's fine. I've only really done this style once. I'm all about experimenting and diversifying as an artist. Glad you think I pulled it off well enough. Cheers.

Well the style is very very 2D, and it uses pretty plain colors, nothing very vibrant. I completely understand about changing art styles and experimenting, I'm doing quite a bit of it myself.

Normally I will go along with almost any criticism out of polite humility, but if it's actually 180 degrees off I might feel compelled to counter. How much less flat can it be? Flat? There's plenty of modelling so that the guts are in your face. Actually, it's pretty F'ing 3D for an illustration.
The colors are plain? The guts are glistening pink, green and blue. Not sure what color you want the dead flesh of the alien to be.
Why don't you just say it doesn't deal with aliens or death?
I'm not offended, REALLY, it just seems like your criticism are ironic.
Thanks anyways.

Well I'm probably not using the right vocabulary or something to describe it, I'm actually a photomanipulator I don't do drawings. However it's not what colors your using it's the shade of them, like the difference between pastel colors and neon colors. I realize you can't use neon colors with this art style, but with a different art style you can use brighter more interesting colors. But you know, I probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

yeah, photo-manipulation is a bit different. I did one as an experiment recently: [link] I have no idea whether you'd consider that one 3D or vividly colored, because we seem to have a different idea of what that means.
Anyway, it doesn't matter. We can agree that neither of us knows what we're talking about for sure. No problemo.

Yeah that one's 3D, and I consider the colors more vivid. I did a photomanipulation with dragonfly wings [link]
I hate to ask, especially after we've had this disagreement, but I'd appreciate it if you took a look at my gallery. If you like photomanipulation you might like some of the stuff in it.

It's no real disagreement. I already checked your profile. Liked the Clint Eastwood right off, and THAT one is definitely 3D. I noticed you have a dragonfly-winged person in there, too. I thought you must have used the same wings as me, but your stock was different. It's all good. We're cool! I consider our interaction has only been positive, clearing up some differences of opinion, viewpoints, and whatnot.

It's interesting you say that, I actually thought we were using the same stock too. Anyways, I'm glad you liked my stuff, there's a couple of your pictures I like quite a bit too. Also I'm glad there's no hard feelings.

Once I got past the shudders your organs brought, this is actually pretty amazing. And philosophical. Really brings out the somewhat cruel nature of humanity, how we're so quick to kill in our knowledge instead of just converse. But maybe I say that because I'm a pacifist. ^^

I'm a pacifist too, well, sorta'. I think we have to fight corruption, the war machine… I hate it, but I find in my life that if I don't stand up for myself, people will just try to exploit me. Anyway, so glad you saw the critique of cruelty in the work, and didn't just see it as a sensationalist piece of pulp. Really appreciate your thoughtful comments.

I do love it, like you said, there are a lot of new subjects to talk about nowdays, talking about aliens is not about sci-fi stuff, its about the other, seeing this work online gives a lot of weight to this piece i think.
These new ways to see art allows that nowdays not only ppl positionated in a good economical status have access to art but anyone with a computer, no matter where this person comes from or where he or she actually is.
I think thinking about aliens its thinking about otherness, and in a whole new level, we often question ourselves, if a being of another planet came to the earth what would they see? how would the conceive concepts such as art?
Thanks for making me thinking of all this!

Art-of-Eric-Wayne In reply to kachicache [2012-02-03 19:34:10 +0000 UTC]
Exactly on a few different counts. The "alien" is the "other." It's funny, it seems like a lot of people dismiss this piece because they think it's immature "alien art" and don't see the the tragedy. Even though it's a gross out piece, even on a comic level, it's actually about the suffering of the alien (who has a halo). The people who like scary aliens and all that don't seem to dig it either.
Oh well.
Also agree with you about people without "good economic status" being able to do art and publish it online. Well, that's mostly true, except that most of us have to work so can't do as much art as we want, and don't make any $ off of putting it up online. Still nice to have some audience though. It's motivating me.
Thanks for your keen observations and kind words!

Thanks! I shudder to remember how much time I spent on those organs. I wanted them to be really "in your face," and gross. The bright colors and glistening quality gave them a comic feel, which I thought was appropriate (for a kind of ironic remove).
