It's a bit strange if he's mute and I don't mean that in a bad way. I say that because on page nine when the panda is calling Art's name, he says that he doubts Art will answer him. What I can gather from that is that Art is physically capable of talking, but he just chooses not to talk because of something from his past. Now it's just a hypothesis, but from what page nine details, it could very well be true. But again, it's just a hypothesis so I can't say whether or not if he can speak or is mute like you say he is. It was just something that I observed.
