This is awesome. Any chance you could upload one without the OutRun text to use as a phone wallpaper? As is, my clock goes over the text, which looks weird

Ha! I thought that myself after I'd painted her. It's an accidental likeness though.

Hey dude,

I think I'd have to agree with the critique about her shadows...I might have painted them in but warmed them up (and significantly, because you're reasons for shortening were sound) with reflected reds from the car... I fear that, without them, she looks almost cut and pasted from somewhere else.
Seems a shame because aside from that, the picture is flawless.

You should have been there doing these, you'd have done a much better than me...but wait, no, then you'd have been getting all my work, so, no, i'm kinda glad you weren't!

Thanks Herman, that's good of you.

Yeah, the more I look at that now, the more it bugs me. I might go back and tweak it - although I usually have a rule whereby I just try and learn from the mistakes for the future, and leave each piece as it was. (It stops me from endlessly picking at my portfolio.)

...a sound decision; endlessly picking at one's portfolio is like looking for fluff in your navel...best not done in case you find something nasty in there

Nice tributes, all that said, good to see them brought back to life

i love the game!
i think the work is great but i can see that she has some problems-
i mean who holds glasses like that? girls you don't touch the lenses, ever.
also the glasses don't pop out as they should be, only after i looked at them close enough i understood what that pink thing is..
and lastly the shadow of her arm On her face is missing, if the light is from her left then there should be a shadow on her from the arm.
the rest- looks majorly awesome, i think that only she needs work.

ArtbyBones In reply to OmriKoresh [2014-08-14 10:08:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the critique. Yeah, regarding the shadow of her arm - I chose to shorten it, as I didn't want to obscure her face at all. (It is there, but just shorter than it would be in reality). I took a few artistic liberties with the lighting (and perspective, a little) here and there.

i would of kept the shadow but added another light source, like a light yellow, from the right side of the image, and it would have popped out the car as well.
it would of softened the shadow, because right now it just looks wrong, if you create something that's suppose to be "wrong" then make it seem on purpose because if i was a client i would of thought by this image that you can paint places but not people.

This takes me back! When they used to do these amazing covers to games that were intricately painted like this. Looks amazing. I miss art like this in video games. Now it's all just 3D comps.

ArtbyBones In reply to jameslink [2014-08-14 07:12:54 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know what you mean... Bob Wakelin (who used to do the covers for OCEAN software back in the 80s and 90s) was the guy who taught me how to paint. I was recently at an event with him selling prints, and looking over his portfolios really makes you realize how much quality cover artwork there used to be for games.

But then, I suppose it's just as bad for films and books these days too. All the fantastic painted covers you used to get on videos (I loved Drew Struzan's stuff) have now almost universally been replaced with Photoshop collages of the actors, with a few effects pasted on top. It's a shame.

jameslink In reply to ArtbyBones [2014-08-14 12:01:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I am a big fan of Struzan. I have a few of his posters full size, the work is incredible. I can't tell you how amazing it would be to learn how to paint like this from one of the greats like this Bob Wakelin fellow. These covers and movie posters are greatly missed. I wish they'd make a resurgence. Thanks for the nice reply!

Thanks. Yeah, most childhood holidays weren't complete for me without popping into an arcade for a quick go on it. (Heh - when there was a REAL beach waiting for me outside.)
