Thanks.

I didn't measure anything out when I painted this. Just eyed it out. When I do abstract stuff, I do it for the fun of it. I don't like to make it too technical. I have other stuff I do that is technical and....while I love the end result, it is not as fun to do.

Thank you for your comments. They're much appreciated.

I kind of thought that's what it looked like. Recently, I have stopped naming my paintings so that what I think it looks like doesn't affect how others see it. I like hearing about what others see in my work and I don't want that destroyed by a name I choose. Know what I mean?

dries In reply to artbyelm [2004-09-19 17:48:24 +0000 UTC]

I never name my paintings, caus I don't believe in naming things. Before I saw the title i just saw something I liked. Without a specific reason, it just struck my eye, and I found it good.

Your paintings are very nice...went to your page to check it out. I like distortion work. Some people can't pull it off too well.

you've apparently seen or are inflenced by the likes of Rothko?

Actually, I didn't know who he was until I posted this on DA and my friend brought it to my attention that it was similar to Rothko's stuff. So, I had to look him up. I really like his stuff now. I think it's beautiful.

I have a friend who is interested in your art. She wants to know how long you needed for this painting

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

artbyelm In reply to bf-re [2004-09-18 23:42:28 +0000 UTC]

How long it took? Not too long. It depends on the layers. I use oils a lot so if I need multiple layers, most of the time is taken up drying.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bf-re In reply to artbyelm [2004-09-19 12:42:02 +0000 UTC]

I hate this question just as well. People keep asking how long something takes as if it would justify how it looks. Stupid. Sometimes theres more about the Idea than the technics I believe.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

artbyelm In reply to bf-re [2004-09-19 17:44:23 +0000 UTC]

One of my art professors once told me never to tell how long a painting took me because:
1) if you didn't spend enough time, they won't like it because they feel you didn't put in any effort

or

2) if you spent too much time, they feel that you aren't talented enough to get it out any quicker.

So, you can't win either way. Some of my work takes a long time, and some are quick. Does it matter? The end product is still the end product.

Well, I guess you're entitled to your own opinion. Thankfully, I paint for myself and the people who like my work, not the ones who don't like it. So, I don't mind. A teacher of mine once said, "With *anything* you do, 25% of the people will love it, 25% of the people will hate it, and the other 50% could care less."

This speaks to me on so many different levels. This is amazing. Wait... Correction, you are an amazing artist. What I get from this is not a sunset, as your title denotes, but rather an illusion for lack of a better word. I look at it as a symbol of pent up energy, underneath a calm and tranquil surface. That may be rather an amateurish view of your work, but I can't help that. Regardless of my silly notions, there is one truth behind this piece of art. That truth is: 'The artist who painted it is truly great".

I see myself as a ghost standing in front of a time-weathered wall (the bright orange etc. part), the top of the wall (the part parallel to the ground) is the bright yellow part, and beyond that is the deep ocean (the dark blue etc. part). Why a ghost? There is no shadow on the wall.

Another vision I see is myself, again a ghost for lack of shadow, standing at the very edge of a time-worn, man-made cliff, looking down into the ocean.

Did I die here or is this where I am finally able to rest?

Who knows? I may just be insane. I'm sorry if my thoughts offend you or anyone else in any way.
