Description
This is a drawing I mentioned working on in my journal back in the spring. It is done with H graphite pencils on multi media board. I like painting on this surface, but not drawing. It fought me the whole way as I tried to create a smooth, polished drawing. I'm not entirely happy with it. Don't think I'll try that paper again for graphite.Related content

This is gorgeous. I love the shading, and the way that you've framed the image. You've got a greatly creative eye on you.

I really like this picture, I don't want to fav it because I want to have your firey unicron picture as my newest favorite...but I will definitely be back. lol...It's beautiful. You have a gift with shading and anatomy...it's inspiring. I've always loved unicorns, but I find I can't draw them very well.
It's also refreshing to see traditional artists sometimes. I've even begun to cross over to computer art, and it just doesn't have something that traditional art does.
excellent work!

it looks fantastic to me, though i would have liked to see it darker so i could see the ground and other parts better. just out of curiosity, why did you choose an H set of pencils? i find them frustrating to use, so i wondered what other people thought of them

It was the support. I tried out Multimedia board. It's composite board that I have used with oils and love. For some insane reason I decided to use graphite. The surface though looking finely textured is so rough that it pulled the lead off as if it were 4b. I couldn't get it darker and more finished looking. It was a struggle to get it there. Well, I could have if I used sandpaper and a stump, but getting detail was impossible.
In another vein-I do use H for my lighter areas if I want a polished, refined coverage. You can't press hard with them or you get an ugly mark. I range along the options, in values, mostly.

The unicorn's stance is very mystified, and your shading detail blows my mind away.

Do you mean the picture or the feeling for horses? Both just sort of developed, the picture just grew and evolved as I worked on it and the connection to horses.... I love the whole feel of horses, to ride and how they move-power and grace. Sexy, hmmm....I guess without thinking about it I was....hmm.

Thanks, that's what I would like to do. Or perhaps, if I could I would like to be both writer and artist. I'm working on a story about and elfin boy and a human girl and how their worlds come together. I haven't had time to work on it for - 8 months? I'm getting ready to start again. Scarey!

=] meanwhile, submit now, sit at home warming your feet with your dough and write. Because you could be making money at this and I really mean it. Your work is better then some of the stuff I have on my own shelf.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm getting my husband ready to leave for Tennessee for his new job, Monday. I'm going to settle down to occupying myself with artwork and getting the house ready to sell in the spring during his absence. (he'll be home every other weekend) Part of the focus IS going to submit a few things-and see. Wish me luck.

I do know about it, and the one for writers and illustrators of children's books. I ordered one of the latter from Northlight Book Club. I guess I should order one for artists and graphic designers too and cover all the possibilities.

I would also think you won your fight - this really looks fantastic dear! The smoothness is easily apparent, and looks so effective.
While I do love what I can see of this, it is absaloutely HUGE on my screen - so I can see very little of a whole, just little bits - and for me that does take away from the true nature of the piece sadly. But what I can see of the body of this horse is that you have a supurb knack for the anatomy of fantasy creatures, you really do! I can almost feel the slight sheen of sweat upon his coat, gained from cantering across a field... It's a really gorgeous piece.

You're right, it is too large. I'm still not sure how large to make the files when I submit them. Will try to make them more user friendly.
(Thanks for the comments on the piece)

about 800 pixels wide is generally a good size to go by, when it's a normal image... obviously sometimes there is a need to make something larger or smaller...

Hi, thanks for the info. I felt totally lost when I started submitting back in December. If I had pulled it up full size on the screen I would have known, though, that it wasn't viewer friendly. (There hasn't been much logic to size setting so far, sort of like a drowning person flailing around, very unattractive activity!!)

Thanks, I'm hanging in there and getting ready to submit an oil soon. I was just thinking about the size and how that would work out in submitting it, today. It's fairly small, but longer than it is tall.

Wow. This is absolutely gorgeous. I haven't done anything in just pencil in a long time... and I don't know if I have the patience for it. But this is a beautiful piece that you have here. Might just have to +fav. Wonderful, keep it up! It was worth all the wrestling you had to do with the paper.: )
