Description
This is a drawing I mentioned working on in my journal back in the spring. It is done with H graphite pencils on multi media board. I like painting on this surface, but not drawing. It fought me the whole way as I tried to create a smooth, polished drawing. I'm not entirely happy with it. Don't think I'll try that paper again for graphite.Related content

We live and learn with our paper. And it really gripes me when I get a piece that doesn't do what I want it to do. But it still turned out really well. I love your shading. The flow of the tail and main are gorgeous and the muscles of the legs are so well defined and smooth. He really stands out well against the background too. Beautiful job!

Thanks. It was a learning experience. I pushed it to get it as finished as I could within the time I felt it was worth. I PROBABLY could have pushed it a little further, but I really didn't feel it merited any more time when I wasn't going to get the polish from it that I want from my work. The experience was worth the effort. Thanks for checking out some of my other submissions. It's always good to hear from people.

I love the curls in the hair. I also love the style of the nostrils and ears because they're very unique.
Great shading job too, the muscle tone was conveyed very well.

Thanks. At one point my unicorns looked like a cross between a goat and a graceful slim pony. I decided that although I didn't want to make them sweet or horsey like some renditions, that they looked too goatish.Now I try to make them more graceful, but still try to keep an exotic, other creature look to the eyes, ears and nostrils.

I think what I like about this the most is how you did the hair. Like the mane...the way the hair curls.

Thanks. I think the hair probably IS the best part. I'm fairly happy with the haunches and neck. The background and foreground are rather shallowly handled due to my difficulty with the paper. I think that the biggest flaw with the drawing.

Well it doesn't show that you had a hard time making it smooth it's just the kind of drawing i wish i could do.

Doing it takes working on one after another after another putting in the time to allow yourself to find the style that suits your expression and build on it. Give yourself time and try to play.

I think you're probably right. And I think her ears are just a little too long, even though I intended to make them long and curvy. Oh, well, there's always the next one.

Thanks. I love doing hair and mane, that's all there is to it. You can get all these little twists into it. If I won the battle it was by a nose, let me tell you.(a whisker?)
