Description 18x24 oil on masonite
This was done in 1997. It took a very long time, with all the detail in the moss and sedum and the layers of color on the rock.
The rocks were loosely based on some photos I had taken of gray boulders behind my grandparent's barn. The rest........

Yeah, I decided to make his claws a little long, more bird like...don't know whether it was a good idea or not....glad you liked him

Quite lovely and magical. It seems like one could almost come across such a creature in real life. I love the detail of this picture and that in some places the brushstrokes can be made out (though perhaps that has to do with the scanner?) The colours are beautiful and the entire piece is just stunning.

Dragons are magical... and you caught their magic on this piece.
Pastel colors are warm and beautiful. I love the ivy climbing the rocks and the moss details.
The two dead leaves give the exact amount of extra color needed to add interest to the work,
and the grass and the flowers are just exquisit.

I can almost feel that this specific dragon was searching for its lair... and it decided that this
was the perfect place to rest

thanks, and I don't know if you can tell, but this one is a mini version of the dragon...inspired by stories by Ann McCaffrey....I loved working on that rock and the vegetation, building the layers...I'm glad you liked it.

No, I couldnยดt tell because I read in Spanish all
my life and I am not familiar with Ann...

But I indeed liked it VERY much !

lovely.

the soft and near monochrome give it a really subtle feel. sort of nonchalantly magical 'still life with dragon' attitude. i like how he blends in and fits rather than dominates the scene.

Beautiful attention to detail, Sandi!

I love the way that the colors harmonize to create this composition: the soft blues and greens mixing together to form the aqua base of underlying radiance, warmed by the ochers and burnt browns.
Besides the leaves along the grassy area, one of my favorite parts is the little claw clutching the rock. And the flowers are masterful. It reminds me of the poem by Yitshak Simone:

"Lizards in my garden,
take wing among the stars.
Winter green and fireflies
remind me where they are."

This painting speaks eloquently about things dear to your heart. Keep up the fine work!

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the critique. So you like the skinny little claw? I spent a remarkable amount of time deciding just where and what angle to put that little appendage and getting the color combo and the toes the right thickness and length. Actually I spent a lot of time toiling over getting it all as right as I could, the shape and color of the eye, the placement of the leaves, the placement and angles of the mossless areas, and playing with the color. This one did take a long time with a lot of thin little layers and so much with just a brush stroke of color here and then switch to another color for a brush stroke there. Things dear to my heart, yes, indeed, I have an affinity for the lush textures and coolness of moss and the damp layer of dirt under them and the cool hard presence of rock. Both speak of my Kentucky mountains.

I liked the poem. It suits the painting so well. Thanks for including it.
