Description Graphite drawing. Aproximately 13x19 inches. It took four scans to get it all into the computer. I loved working on this, although the shoulders were really hard to figure how I wanted them to look and were a major struggle.
Thought about calling this QUEEN!! because she is every bit a Queen, but it seemed to simple.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I do try to make the anatomy look 'right,' and trust and bond is the strongest quality to the drawing, I think. The dragon, besides being huge and powerful, looks very protective of the girl. And the girl, while being small and fragile is standing in a rather precarious position, but both her intimate touch on the dragon's jaw and her relaxed pose show confidence and trust in the dragon.

I absolutely love this drawing. I love the blending and the shoulders are brilliant!!! I also love that the dragon is soft and not harsh and threatening as they are usually portrayed. This feels more 'real' to me!Β

Thanks so much. Β To me there is an intimacy, love and trust in the way the rider leans casually back against the queen, her feet precariously placed on the dragon's rounded leg and her hand tender and familiar against the jaw. The queen, for surely she can be nothing else with that arch in her neck, looks intently off in another direction. The girl is perhaps watching for her lover to return on his dragon? Has the queen spotted prey, or possible danger to her rider? Her head and arched neck, so proud and queenly, nearly arrogant also has a look of being protectively curved over the girl's slight form. The eye is intent, the muscles coiled ready to act...if it's food, if it's danger? And the girl is so trusting that this huge dragon would never move in such a way that she could be harmed. I didn't plan all of that out originally. Originally it was a girl and her dragon, great friends, up on a cliff, waiting and watching for ...whatever. But as I worked on it these other things started coming out. Anyway, that's what I think whenever I look at this drawing. I'm glad you like it!

Outstanding work, and this is traditional art? Amazing, thanks for showing me that you can still draw something great and you don't need computers to make it look absolutely breath-taking, you skill is unimaginable; skill like those back in the middle-ages.

I hope you keep up the grand work.

Amazing use of pencil I always end up making mine smudgy, but this seems to remain smooth ( love the neck). How did you get it so perfect?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to Wyvernadas [2010-01-31 23:16:17 +0000 UTC]

several different grades of pencil, sharp point, light touch, book under hand and arm to keep down the smudging

Thanks, glad you liked it

Beautiful. You have a fantastic attention to detail, the shimmering effect is TOUGH with graphite work and you pulled it off amazingly. I'm glad I found your gallery! I'll be stalking er...*cough*...WATCHING you now...

Again, beautiful work and I'm particularly impressed by the size proportion you accomplished...the two both look so incredibly realistic and you've captured the pure magnitude of teh dragon, LOVELY!
