Description
I started working on Bob's Dragon yesterday (not the final name, it's just.......Bob's.........dragon) and decided to do a more or less real time tutorial with it. This stage was done yesterday, Sunday in about 4 hours.I took pictures with my digital camera, which limits the quality, but it's extremely hard to get a scan of a wet oil!
Grumbacher mostly, with a few Windsor Newtons, oil
18 x 24 mutlimedia board.
Multimedia board is a thin hard board made of fibers and resins and has the texture and brittleness of a thick eggshell. Ungessoed it is absorbent, until the first layer of paint dries. I like the watercolor like effect of painting straight onto it without gesso. I use a medium made of part linseed oil, part Linquin and a tad of Venice Turpentine. I don't know if this combo is wise, but I like it. I paint the first layer very fluid so that it goes into the board and sometimes wipe any excess off. It is dry today and ready to paint on.
From here on things will probably go slower as the detail builds.

Thanks........sometimes even I wonder how I work. In the last addition where I was trying to correct the design I had to turn off thinking and just work it out. It got messy, metaphorically speaking......my palette looked pretty messy, too, though.

Well, I've learned that if it doesn't work you might as well try.........art that doesn't work doesn't work so you can't get much worse than that.

I still have a hard time with painting. So it's really nice to see a tutorial for painting. Especially from a painter I admire! ^_^ Thank you! This actually helps a bit with my understanding of basic painting concepts.

seeing the process unfold like this is fascinating! I like that you do this with some of your work! Being a dragon lover, I am breathless waiting to see the final product.

Thanks. I like the dragon so far. Someone had asked about a tutorial on hair, and I may try that, although at the time I was thinking, well, I just make it up as I FEEL it. How do I teach that? And someone else had asked about my colored pencils, so..... But back to our dragon, I think she'll need some red violet in the shadows under her wings and body, but that will be a later addition. Well I've done some housework and walked the dog, so I'm off to my painting.

Very impressive. I'm trying to learn to use oils myself and I'm amazed how much you've achieved here. At this stage, it has the lovely qualities of watercolour painting

Thanks. It does have a watercolor affect and I think one of the big reasons is the textured surface absorbs the thinned paint in a similar way. It won't stay that way, though. I worked on the dragon last night and she's already looking more like oil.

Thanks. I think the biggest help this one could be is to show the effect of what most of our instructors kept saying over and over............work the whole thing, not just finish one spot and then move on to the next one. It helps to create and keep a balance in the picture. I'm hoping doing it will not only be helpful to anyone interested, but help me think out some changes I want to make in my approach.
