Description I thought for a long time what to title this. When I started this sketch (and it is a sketch, only took me four hours to do) I was thinking of a refugee family, or a family looking for work or a new opportunity. I decided on "Milestone" because half of the family is looking behind and the rest looking forward. It means a lot to me, this one, even though it is just a sketch. I was feeling down today and this represents a bit of that.

Precise pen on bristol. NO sharpie.

Stunning! Loving the structured line work and all the lovely stroke textures and crosshatching you used. Makes the monotone palette more varied and.. awesome! Dunno why but I really love the little circular scales on the dragon....

... OH I JUST NOTICED THE KITTY! That's sweet, he looks so happy on top of the dragons head, very cute

This is a nice piece, you conveyed the emotions of the people really well. It seems as if they have picked up and left hastily...from impending doom?

Anyway, you have the potential to take this sketch a lot further than you already have. I love it.

When I first saw this, I liked it a lot. But then I found myself coming back to it again and again, and I have to say, this probably one of my favorite images of yours.

It's almost biblical, somehow. I don't know if it's the idea of a refugee family or the looking back/looking forward thing, but it reminds me of the stories of the Hebrews, traveling to the Promised Land. And, really, that just makes me like it even more.

It makes me want to write -their story, the things that've brought this family to this moment...There's so much implied history and emotion behind this sketch.

So. Once again. Love the image. It's inspiring, like everything you create. Keep it up.

And on a final note: love the cat. XD

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment. This is one of my favorites too. I feel it's one of the few I've gotten right. For me, I drew it with the idea that something terrible had happened, that he had lost work, that things were not going well, but one has to keep moving on. I think it's what it's about...moving on.

distortified [2008-04-01 19:39:45 +0000 UTC]

You already have so many comments on this one, and I didn't feel like reading them at the moment (though usually I would. XD) so I'm sorry if I'm just repeating a lot of what's already been said.

First and foremost, 'cause you know me, the dragon. I love the dragon. You've drawn some very graceful and some very savage beasts, but that has to be one of the most comfortable I've ever seen. If ever there was the concept of a 'Family Dragon', that just seems right. The horns look kind of wooden and branch like, which gives it that maternal, earthy feel, and the face helps nail that down. Also, I really like the patterns you chose for her. They look very tribal, and kind of mystical. It's a great touch.

On the over-all piece, I love the bits of symbolism splashed about. Usually, that stuff flies over my head in art (and I'm probably still missing some), but I love it in this.

And may I say that your ability to draw both humans and various sorts of animals well... makes a lot of artists cry. XD

Thanks so much for all your observations and comments on this one, I really appreciate it. I think you're right...it does look like the most comfortable dragon I've ever seen even though their situation at that moment isn't as peaceful as it sort of looks. And yep, she's a family dragon...more of like...grandma.

Awww, thank you.

I have been super busy, but I took a week off.
I just got back from Daytona, and it was "meh", and there was 1 day in jail, but nothing serious and they dropped the charges.
Hows things with you? Feeling better?

Daytona...my old stomping grounds!! (well, more like the whole east-side of Volusia). I really should have put two-and-two together....you being a tattoo apprentice...you missing about the same time as Bike Week....

Meh? Daytona during Bike Week was "meh?" This is the craziest time to go...you have the Daytona 500 stragglers, the BCR rioters, and the spring-breakers, and the bikers. And every single one of them is drunk. Of course you ended up in jail at some point. You went in MARCH for crying out loud. I hope it wasn't serious though. Quit getting in trouble...unless you're going for the bad-boy babe magnet allure, but still....

Me? I still have my good days and bad days, but I think I'm doing alright...just getting the left arm all fixed up, but other than that, nothing big. Thanks for asking about me. You've been missed.

ckirkillustr8 In reply to 1pen [2008-03-18 22:50:10 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure when Bike Week is, but I don't think it was this last one. There wheren't many bikers or spring breakers. And everyone was REALLY young, like illegal for me to talk to young.
But jail was sucky, more for the guards than other inmates, who where a nice bunch for being mostly crack heads.

Good your feeling better. I have been meaning to pop on to say "Hi" but just so busy with the apprenticeship.

So cheers chica your works looking real good.

Bike week is generally the first and second week of march (but sometimes it moves around a week or two). The spring breakers start showing up about the third week of March. Ah, young locals. Well, that's true too. There are lots of bored bored local teens. I was one of them once, but the good kind who went out into the water and didn't bother anyone when she wasn't doing homework.

Thanks, glad you like. Good to hear too that you've been busy with the apprenticeship, how are you feeling about the job?

ckirkillustr8 In reply to 1pen [2008-03-20 23:13:35 +0000 UTC]

I'm feeling pretty confident.
All I need is the power supply, as far as big expenses go. And then comes the practice. The owner mentioned using pigs feet at first before moving on to people, but I think I'll just use my legs. I can just cover up all the crappy tats.
Or I may be a natural born tattooist and I won't have to. Heres to hoping it's the later, rather than the former.

I love the fact that even though you say it's just a sketch, there's a lot of thought and detail put into it. From the scales, to the emotion and symbolism of the people, the little kitty, the dogs in the back, the hawk, the designs on the dragon, and even the simple, yet effective, background.... I wish I had enough confidence to draw with pen more often. Kudos for a job well done.

Hey, Reid, thanks for checking this one out. I need feedback and I appreciate you taking the time to comment on this one esp. with how busy you are.

I call it a sketch because it was rushed and is, on a whole, pretty rough. A lot of the work that I post is, unfortunately, sketchy. It's a bad habit of mine and a pet-peeve of a lot of people on DA, but to be honest...despite that people seem to prefer the sketchy work rather than the monster projects like "Morning Breeze" (which took weeks to do) and "You Are Responsible for Your Rose".

I did put a lot of thought and emotion into it. I'd already seen the scene in my mind and was riled up enough to quickly get it down. I really appreciate you and others noticing a lot of the details, really, (though I made no note of it in the comments section) you and a few other friends of mine have been encouraging and inspiring me to step out of the comfort zone and attempt things I wouldn't normally do. It may be a sketch but it's still a stretch for me. I guess making it rough work lets me explore the new waters with less of those uncomfortable sensations like vulnerability and impending humbling failure.

Thanks again.

You're right about doing things quicker and sketchier, and not having to worry about spending too much time on something that's going to be a failure. Things tend to be more dynamic that way, and I always find I surprise myself with things I can pump out like that. Sometimes it's easy to put too much thought into a piece, and it lessens the overall impact.
