Description
6.5x17, or so....inkOn the one hand I feel relieved to have this done, to have completed a drawing. On the other I'm disappointed with the unicorn on the left.
I like the one on the right, but the left one should look younger, more delicate, more feminine. I let the ink build up get away from me in working the jaw. It's too heavy and muscular. The part of the nose just below the eye should have been scooped out a bit like an Arab to give her a more delicate look. And the entire muzzle area should be whiter. Oh, well. I think I will rework this when I have more time.

While it'd disappointing when the finished product doesn't look like what you had in mind, the work isn't disappointing to the viewer The unicorn on the left looks more masculine than the one of the right, but I would have assumed that's what you were shooting for and think it's a successful work for that reason.
From your description of what you wanted I can understand your frustration tho, that's one of the things that keeps me from ink work. And sploshes, I hate it when that happens.
Is there any remedy with this sort of work tho? I'm curious...is it possible to use a white ink to create negative space or highlights? I guess if it WERE possible you'd have to also use it thru the entire work tho.
Hmm.
Anyway I like it as it is, but also feel for you, having made similar mistakes on traditional works every single time I make one lol. It's painful. Sploshes are the MOST painful tho, so at least you avoided that! lol

I think the picture works pretty well on it's own merit and am not unhappy with the way it looks in and of itself. It was meant to be of a female unicorn from a fellow deviant's story on the left and an Amalthea like unicorn on the right and I lost control of lefty. So I am disappointed that Shahly is not the character on the left.
You can make small corrections in ink, but not easily. I have gone to using inclosed technical pens that you use and throw away, so no blotches. I do still come up with mistakes in marks though. You can excise a spot of line with an exacto knife or razor point and then try to smooth the paper down as much as possible. You can lift some with an ink eraser and an eraser shield. You can also use China white acrylic paint to cover mistakes, or so I hear. I don't have any, but need to get some. I have cover some mistakes by lifting as much as possible and then going over what's left with white pencil. None of these are perfect and invisible to the eye when you look closely at the original. Sometimes you can turn the goof into something else interesting in the drawing and make it better than you had planned. If you need to draw back over the repaired area the ink will frequently look different and need a second coat or have to be applied very carefully to minimise the roughness of the area.
More frequently than not, with the use of the inclosed pens, my usual problem is either laying down marks in the wrong direction or in such a way that the marks on one object blend in too much with those behind it and make it hard to see, or else I put down too many marks, trying to build and model the object, as I did in this one on the left, and it ends up too dark and heavy. Shrug. It's an unforgiving tempermental medium, that's for sure. I used to stiple and would set up my goal to do the entire drawing with dots, even the edges and use no solid, straight lines what so ever. (Look at Wildwood for example) Takes a lot of work, but makes modeling and shading a lot easier. I think I want to start doing a combination of solid line, short lines and stippling, and of course some hatching, in the future. I DO NOT like cross hatching in most instances.)
Oh, well, this book is long enough so I had better stop this.

I dunno, looks beautifully angled and anatomically plausible to me Maybe he has pony stock rather than Arabian blood!

It's a matter of what the one on the left was supposed to look like. She was supposed to be young and delicate and sweet and came off looking too coarse and too old. I will try again in a couple weeks.

Beatiful madam! I agree with you that the unicorn on the right does look a bit more masculine and rough. I personaly think that Right looks a little 'rehistoric' or of a pony-influenced standard.

Actually, I think the one on the left is better drawn. The fawn-like one... I think her neck is much too large, it looks like it should be supporting a larger or else more horselike head, hence the slight unnaturallness of the contrast.

They are different breeds of unicorns, so contrast was needed, as to the neck? I must think about this. You could be right.

Or I could be wrong
I think also, because the larger unicorn has a small, delicate head, both look a little out of proportion, so the... delicacy needs emphasising more?

I don't think there's anything wrong with the unicorn on the left. Both are very well drawn. I see them as different "breeds" of unicorns; the left could be an "american-ized" version of a unicorn, and the right could be the european unicorn. But no matter what I say - they both look great, and the overall piece is beautiful.

thanks, and they are different breeds...the one on the left was a particular character from a book, or was supposed to be and I failed to catch her youth or delicacy, must try again

From a book of your own, perhaps? I know what you mean, though. I have difficulty drawing my own characters - they never quite turn out as wonderful as I imagined them.
But I'm sure you'll do splendidly if you ever try at this character again!

I dont know why your harping on the one on the left. I think it is absolutly amazing. To me it looks like the little girl has great knowledge for her age and the girl on the right is interested in the knolwedge. Even if you dont like the one on the left you get what you get. I hope itll grow in you
GREAT JOB!

LOL thanks. Actually, the one on the left does have great knowledge for her age, as she has become human, and loved another human, loves her unicorn stallion and has fought dragons and humans...., and the one on the right will indeed be interested in what she knows.I should share your insight with the author.

She looks like a quarter-horse cross
