Description 11x14 Caran d'Ache colored pencil............I think I like this new, lighter approach to pencil application......only time will tell whether I use this for everything and use the heavier painterly technique only for images requiring it to depict smooth textures, or whether I return to the heavy waxy look for it's richness in color and only use this occasionally

Life is a Waiting Game....this is a portrait of a coworker's beloved Yorkie. She seems to like it. Thank God.

Very sweet! Great job!

I hope I don't offend, but, the eyes and nose look a little bold in comparison to the softness of the rest of the draw. I still think it's adorable!

They are. Could have used some points of boldness in some of the fur, to help balance it...greater softness in the eyes and nose would have led to a bland fuzzy picture. Thanks for the comments and glad you liked it.

I really like this, the detail on the nose is ridiculous. I sort of like the way you did the background (with the patchiness) but at the same time I feel like it pulls my attention away from the subject, either way I really like it cute doggie, haha

This is so cute, Sandi! It looks like a classical watercolour actually I had a Yorkie, who died a few months ago so this is especially precious to me

Oh, I'm so sorry, I know you must still miss your pet. It took me 3 years to want another dog after my collie died.

I do miss him so much, Sandi, and to top it off he died in such a tragic way. He was an abandoned blind yorkie that we found about three years ago. Can you imagine someone just abandoning a little dog like that Anyhow, we found him just wandering around out in front of our house, we attempted to find the owner to no avail, so he became my baby. He was such a sweet little guy with a courageous spirit! I only had him for 3 1/2 years, they were such precious ones. The guilt over his death will haunt me forever, but my husband always tells me that he is in heaven now seeing and romping and playing, it helps a little. I can so relate to not wanting another dog for so long, losing a beloved pet is so sad

I cannot imagine it. Do you reckon maybe he got lost out of a car traveling through the area, someway, or that people just set him out hoping someone would take him in? I am so sorry, again. You didn't say how he died, or why you would feel guilty, but I feel guilt over the death of my mother's little long haired chihauhau........28 years ago? I feel so bad about it, still. He was sick, so I picked her and him up and drove them back to my apartment in the town I lived in, to take him to the vet the next day. He was probably 10, maybe older, I don't remember. But big dog person that I was, we get him to my apartment and I try to spoon some water into his mouth and he coughs and then.............died. And mother just sat there and looked at him and then just sort of picked him up. We tried to resuscitate him, by rugging his ribs, but. Someone told mother his syptoms sounded like heartworm. She loved that little fellow so. He was the perfect dog for her, tiny like her and so pretty and such a good little dog. Sigh.

The question is: "How could she not love this?" This is adorable, and there is so mcuh emotion in those beautiful eyes. My family used to have a Yorkie, and this looks just like a Yorkie to me! Really adorable, and nice pencil tecnique too!

Thanks. Maybe dog portraits aren't the most loved here on DA. Most of my watchers at the moment are fans of fantasy, I think, so this really isn't what appeals to them. I really like both.

You always do such incredible work with color but I really like this and the picture before it. While I see the texture of the pencil (A media I am missing right now.) The light colors remind me of water color. Where you want to see the paper as much as the color. It's especially effective on the darker hairs on it's back.

Looking at the grass for some reason reminds me of my art teacher. The one that taught me the most about colored pencil. She was always stressing me to play with mixing colors on the page. It takes longer but I truely love the end results.

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to SpottedPegasus [2008-02-27 23:58:08 +0000 UTC]

Some of my pencils are reminding me of watercolor, lately....the transluscence of the color over the paper. I think I like that. Layering or mixing the color of colored pencil does give it such richness and depth, something you just don't get from only one or two colors. But it does take time, that's for sure.

Oops, thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying them and letting me know what you're thinking, too.

SpottedPegasus In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2008-02-28 02:02:08 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure but I think that might be why I avoided color for the longest time. I couldn't figure out how to make things so rich and dark without adding graphic and when you just add graphite or black things get muddy rather then mixing complimentary colors. OK now I'm reminding myself of my favorite art teacher.

Again nice work.

YOu do have to watch for the muddying, yep. Adding analogous colors works, too.

If I ever get my photo program working again, I've got a water color from a year ago I want to put up that the assignment was to mix colors on the page to make shades of gray. I could have done better work then what I did because I had sort of rushed it, but I like it as an example.
