you're welcome! I stared at it for a few minutes trying to think of more to say, but I was too tired to think straight!

Lovely. I assume the Caran d'Ache and Prismacolour have different properties? What are they?

Actually, let me cover my 3 brands
Verithin...is a thin hard lead, can't build it up into deep rich color, but though hard, goes on soft enough that you can rub it with you finger and fill in a light shade of color over the area, blocking out the white paper fairly quickly in pale color, it also erases easily for early forays into color combinations, makes nice sharp clean edges to the image
Prismacolor....waxy and somewhat soft, can be built into rich waxy paint like colors, is slower to work with, does not create as sharp a detail or edge as Verithin, cannot erase all of the color unless applied very very lightly, has vivid rich colors, covers the paper in color slowly and in lines or ovals that have to be placed close together and/or burnished if you want no paper showing through
Caran d'Ache...softer than Prismacolor, and the version I have is the water soluble version, Suprasoft I believe it's called, has a slightly pastel effect in that it's slightly blend-able if you have enough on the paper and in that it creates a rougher finished look in comparison to Prisma's waxy surface, (you see more of the paper texture with it),it covers the paper's color more quickly than Prismacolor even though you still see the texture because it is a softer and thicker lead) it is much more easily erased than Prisma and for further into the layering process, the colors tend to be a bit more muted, earthy looking, and you can't get as much detail with it as the Prismacolor
With this drawing I determinedly stuck with the Caran and took the layering and detail as far as I could, getting a fairly soft effect with some white of the paper retained. I worked with it until I could no longer get the detail or even color build up or shift that I wanted. Then I pulled out the Prisma and easily worked more color into a few areas and crisper detail in where I needed. I only used the Prisma in a few places.

Good Grief. And I'm so proud of my one FaberCastell case, though I do often turn to my coloured charcoals for certain effects. Thanks for the little course, it's always nice to learn more.
I'm going to the Autodidactic School of Art right now, so every bit helps!

There are several good brands available. FaberCastell is one of them. You just learn to work with what you have and learn what you want in the way of handling and look. If you're happy with them that's what counts.

Well, like I said, I'm self-taught, so I'm still feeling my way through a lot of things. I know I sometimes mix charcoal and coloured pencil, and knowing that different brands have different feels to them is good. I'll just put my surviving Prismacolours in the box and experiment!

Nice portrait! I love the colours you've used. It's light and summer-like because of the warm colours. The little guy is just so adorable!
