Description If you've read 'The Wise Man's Fear' you'll know who/what Cthaeh was. This scene was inspired by the encounter between Kvothe and Cthaeh, while he was in Felurian land. I chose to depict Kvothe in the most traditional look he has throughout the book (at least in my mind) although at the time of this encounter he didn't have his lute with him (nor any clothes, for that matter...). In some other details I was also not completely faithful to the scene in the book (the path deviated more from the tree, for example, but that didn't work visually in one single still image). The clouds were also not present in the book but I thought it worked well for the concept.

Rendered in Vue, as always.

I love it, it has that 'beautiful but ominous' feel to it.

i always thought the Cthaeh's tree did'nt have leaves, but instead had the butterflies that then littered the ground. so i sort of imagined a giant ever-shifting rainbow tree

I thought Cthaeh would be bigger and sort of more ancient, but this setting is just as great!

Also I don't think Kvothe had his lute there. Or any cloths. Or am I wrong?

Man, this is blowing my mind. It looks so realistic while keeping this quality that places it in the Fae. It's like you actually took a picture of the inside of the book. Kvothe is an incredible touch, too.

Like this one very much!.....and if I'm not mistaken, that's the same kind of tree I asked about in a previous picture.....is it solid growth or imported?.....the branches make me think its solid growth but the trunk is much better than anything I've seen with Vue.....

Yes, that's the same tree, xfrog.

Very interesting, for some reason I always thought of "Felurian land" in darkness. Even though they spent a very long time together, it always looked like the moon was the only light source (in my mind).

Thanks!
Yes, you are more or less right, most of the time it was dark. In the world of Fae the time of day depended on the location. It was always the same time of day on any given location. On Felurian's place it was always dusk. But, if you remember, on that time that Kvothe met Cthaeh, he was walking towards the day light and he had already walked a long time when he met him.

well done artur..are those vue trees? I am sort of looking for alternative trees than vue trees...vue trees leaves seems odd to me...i am looking into Onyx, although I have some Xfrog's...nice grassy land you have there, I do see some varieity of grasses/weeds being placed which makes it more realistic.

ArthurBlue In reply to pdeck [2012-07-05 07:22:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Philip!
Those are xfrog trees. I've been gradually giving up on Vue trees because, like you said, the leaves seem odd. This is probably due to their planar arrangement.

pdeck In reply to ArthurBlue [2012-07-05 16:38:17 +0000 UTC]

do you have xfrog program? Or you get these trees free or you buy just the plant packs?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArthurBlue In reply to pdeck [2012-07-05 18:11:43 +0000 UTC]

I used the demo version for a while but I didn't buy the program yet. But I probably will, it's a great program.
I downloaded all the free items (there are many) and bought also two models (but not a full pack). All the trees in this image are free, except the central one.

Recently I've been trying to remember that nice book I read last year ... I couldn't remember its title and when I saw your pictures, I thought it looked like a scene from that book I had envisioned in my head and googling for "wise man's fear" from your description, I saw it was the book I was looking for!
Thanks for your art and helping me remembering the book's title
