Description Something completely different from my previous image...
Another place that I think would be quite nice to peacefully read a good book...
Here are the other two reading places I made for this boy:

As always, this was made and rendered in Vue.

What are your render times, and what kind of machine are you running? Would you know if rendering foliage in Vue take longer in Maya? Thanks, amazing work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArthurBlue In reply to rrogers8 [2013-05-05 08:57:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
The render times are influenced by many settings (render, materials, light, atmosphere, etc). If I'd let everything on its defaults, this particular image would render in Vue in more than 24 hours probably. By optimizing these settings, this render took about 8 hours. Normally, all my renders take between 6 and 10 hours - I adjust the settings to try to fall on these time frames.
I don't know anything about Maya so I wouldn't be able to compare. But be aware that not all foliage is equal. There's foliage based on transparency maps, there's foliage based on geometry; the objects can be high or low poly; the bump/normal/displacement maps on trunks and leaves may be procedurally generated with a function that may have different computing times or you may have no bump/normal/displacement at all; you may have translucency on or off for the leaves; etc, etc. Render times of apparently similar trees may be completely different in fact.

Very informative, thanks for the response. I understand all the techniques that you suggested to save resources, but it still seems complicated. You must deal with different render layers too and a lot of complicated compositing. It's a cool process, and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

ArthurBlue In reply to rrogers8 [2013-05-05 22:00:27 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I don't do any compositing at all. My renders have only one layer and I almost don't do any post-work - I may adjust levels, if needed (rarely is) or I may de-saturate the colors if needed (frequently is). I may do one or the other glow effect on some highlights. And that's it, that's about all the post-work that I do.
About the techniques I talked about, it's less complicated than it sounds.

Great !
How many polygons in this scene ? (just curious ... )

In such a place, I would prefer walk and look around, better than read a book... even a good book

Thanks!
Almost 5 billion polygons.
The boy has walked and looked around a lot, now he's tired and needs to rest a bit.

Maybe you've been living in a city for too long.
That depends on the kind of forest. I guess that on a tropical area it could be bad but in a mild climate like where I live this is really not a problem. There's maybe the occasional insect but it's really not a problem. Unless you have some kind of phobia for these little friends.

Thanks!
I think there are two main ingredients that are a bit different from the average Vue image: I put some little details on top of the water and I put some little details under the water. That makes it much nicer and believable.
