Description
I have been distracted with other things lately, not much in the mood for making images.Anyway, I really enjoy making images with deserts... Here are a few more I made:
This image was rendered in Vue.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I did try WorldMachine when I was searching for a terrain modeler. At the time, WM didn't have the popularity that it has today, not even close. And GC had 3 features that, afaik, WM still doesn't have and that make all the difference for my usual way of working. GC was recently purchased by another company but it still seems like abandonware, i agree. If it were today, I would hesitate...
These are the features I mentioned:
1) River simulation: you define a few water sources and it just flows down the terrain, carving it, simulating lakes, etc. I used it here, for example:
Β
2) Isolines: you draw isolines of a terrain (i.e., lines with the same height) and the simulator builds the terrain around it. This way you actually have a really easy and intuitive way to influence the shape of your terrain. I don't like completely random terrains, I usually have an idea of the shape of terrain I want. It's hard to explain, you can see it in work here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXb9-cβ¦
I used this many times, some examples here:
Β Alignment
3) Road building: you draw a line in the terrain and it carves a road. Now you can do it in Vue with splines (more or less... it's better in GC) but at the time it didn't exist. I used it here, for example:
The Road and the Light Β The Third Route
(there seems to be a limit of 5 thumbs...)

I like the rivers in GeoControl too, but I think World Machine is going to be adding them in their next release. Β I've only scratched the surface with it really.
I will add that you can specify the starting shape of your landscape in World Machine using the "Layout Generator" control. Β Basically you draw shapes (lines, polys, circle, squares, etc) and those are your starting shapes that get eroded and deformed by the other controls. Β I almost like it better than isolines.
This is probably my best Geocontrol image...
Β
Hopefully World Builder catches up with Geocontrol soon!

That's a classic.
In the meantime I want to Cloddy website (the new owners of GC, now WorldCreator). They are investing in a 2nd version, which is good, but there's something I didn't like: they will release the Unity version before the general version, which could mean a shift in focus in their strategy...
(P.S.: I just realized that using the initials of WorldCreator, like we did with GC and WM, is not very good - WC doesn't sound good... )

I want to walk and/or swim in every of your fabulous landscape, and this one seems so enjoyable and peaceful, with warmth (while here in my city it is so grey and fresh....). It brings some joy to my grey day, thank you a lot !

You had me until that floating bubble in the background. Everything else is a coherent enough spectacular dreamscape that the mind doesn't realize it's dreaming.

Thank you!
I know what you mean about the bubble. I added it to make a link with the foreground, where similar bubbles (of water) are being born. This way there's a conceptual link from the foreground to the background (also imposing some notion of passing time because of the different stages of evolution), as a counterpoint to the geometric natural link in the mid ground formed by the arches. I felt this was needed, not only for symbolic reasons, but also to add a bit more depth to an image that is otherwise very much living of objects perpendicular to the camera (the connection boy-birds and the arches), which could make it too 2-dimensional.
Almost all the objects in my images have a reason to be there, be it conceptual, symbolic, compositional or simply aesthetic. Sometimes some of these intentions partially colide with others, despite my efforts, and this could be one of these cases. So, I know well what you mean. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoyed it.

I would love to explore that desert, especially the mysterious arches in the background...

So desolate yet looks really fun to explore. Especially when one goes to figure out how that pillar in the background works (I can almost see it flowing like a lava lamp )

I love the setting in this. The image gives out a really specific feeling of what's going in in the scene.
